2000 3.0 GU Patrol Engine options

Post by uninformed »

Hey all, Getting some help for my neighbour. His 2000 3.0 GU AUTO has just shit the bed. Nut fell off the end of the turbo or such. He has been advised to not rebuild the 3.0 as there are more problems around the corner.

WIll a Nissan 4.2TD bolt up to his 3.0 Auto?

What is the approx cos for a LS V8+auto conversion (who does these in SEQld)

any other options to consider?

cheers

Yes you could install a 4.2, but you will have a lot of trouble getting the auto to work. If you can at all.
You'd need the complete 4.2 loom, radiator/shroud, plus weld in new engine mounts (they are different)..... 4.2s were never offered here with an auto (or anywhere else?) and youll end up with an engine that drinks more and goes worse (unless tuned up at additional costs and will still drink a lot more than the 3.0). Bear also in mind depending on which series 3.0 it is (2000 should be a series 2) you will have emission and pollution considerations too, ie you cant put a GQ 4.2 in a GU etc as the motor must not be earlier than the vehicle.
Personally, I wouldnt bother.

A basic LS conversion, starting with a Gen 3 VX series engine will cost about $10-$15,000, dep on lots of issues. whilst a basic 5.7 conversion motor (ie with loom/ecu etc) can be had for $1500, you will get to know your auto sparky and gearbox specialist as the auto needs to talk to the TPS and other values to operate properly.
Each successive series of engine will cost more, ie L98, 6.0, 6.2 etc.
At some point the Patrol auto will become the weak link in the chain, so if you chase horsepower or drive hard and the car has additional weight (ie drawers, racks, bar work, LR tanks) pushing the heavy car using a lot more HP and torque will destroy the trans.

Cheapest option?
Strip the bits you want off it, part the existing Patrol, buy another 3.0 GU and refit said parts. Or buy a 4.2 GU.

Footnote:
OK, I have a 4.5 Ti Series 1, with lots of extras that I got for cheap.... on the cards is a 6.2 LS / 6L80 conversion, less the price I get for the 4.5/Auto/LPG. A mate will do the conversion for a really good price, he has around 150 V8 engine conversions under his belt to date.
So who am I to talk? LOL
My friends aren't holding me back..... I'm pulling 'em forward.

Thanks for the help. He has been steered away from the 3.0 by his 4x4 mechanic that really only works on nissans and Toyotas, and he is not a nissan hater by any means. I too have heard bad things about the 3.0.

I also asked on the patrol forum but gave up after i was not allowed to post the above....
