My 2nd 4WD was a 84 4Runner, numerous holden V8's (253 & 308) heavy duty marks 5 speed, landcruiser rear diff with 4.11 ratios, and all the usual 4WD bits including bars, winch, lockers, big spring lift, 2 inch bodylift, rear step with spare wheel carrier, roofrack with rooftop tent and all the usual interior draw systems. It was great BUT if I could do it again with what I know now I would keep the weight down (rear step, roofrack, draw's ect) and probabbly loose the roof and get soft top and I wouldn't have so many issues as I did. I would also not put in 4.1 diff but would match the ratio of the front with a cruiser conversion rear.
In all the years I had the 4Runner, apart from many motor issues, mainly caused by shitouse mechanical rebuilds, the only dramas I had were CV's (as everyone does), 2 broken shafts in T/Case, a few fan thru radiator problems as there was no room for a clutch fan and thermos didn't want to cool the car, the usual rock scars and the final straw was a snapped rear housing.
Its a good conversion if done right.

i spoke to Rod at Castlemain Rod Shop and asked him about the supra 5 spd convertion ( this is his email).
We have the V8 fitting kit for the Hilux at $800.00 which gives you
everything to bolt up the motor to the transmission and bolt it in. We also
offer the Supra but with the 3.25 first gear and the 25% overdrive box which makes the vehicle very useable. The transfer case adaptor is available along with the crossmember bracket, speedo cable and right angle drive. The boxes are reconditioned and the box and kit costs $1500.00. You could sell off your Hilux box and pay for most of the swap.
Regards
Rod

Thought about a Supra?
Bolts straight in.
Much lighter.
Cheaper to run.
Similar horsepower.

I ask as I have an 80 model with a ball tearer 18r ...
I can see a motor swap in my future and want to do it CHEAP ..
Holden notors can be had for almost nada if the timing is right .. and displacemet seems like a cheap alternative to gears .. (see the cheap bit again) at least in the short term ..
It will be a work truck so it's still gotta be able to move with weight in top and remain reliable ...
