Hi all, any one out there had any trouble with there steering being indirect after doing a sas using a chaos double arm
By that i mean having to turn the wheel a long way to get the 4by to turn into a corner and then further again to go around the turn i also have about a half a turn of the wheel of free play when driving on a straight road, It takes one and a bit full turns of the wheel to make a 90 degree turn.
Could i use a longer pitman arm?
Could i shorten the double arm?
Its very scary driving on a wet road with swampers on with steering like this so i'd like to fix the problem so if u know how to or i've done something wrong can u help me out.

I've just spoken to a mate and he think that the caster may be out as the diff is tilted slightly foward and the swivel hubs are about level not tilted back slightly could this be a contributing factor to the problems im experiancing

The steering shaft is all in good condition is it. As I just broke the flex joint rubber on the steering shaft and it now has about 90degrees before the steering takes up.
Yeah checked all that (inc tierod ends etc) everthing seems as it should, Im more worried about my castor angle at the moment cause the more i think of it the more i think thats what it is

Even if your caster is out, i dont think you should have free play in you steering, are you using the below pictured steering links mounted to your swivels, if so, i had a mate that had 3 bolts broken off and this was causing him to have excessive freeplay, just one idea, check it out, he was lucky the 4th bolt was finger tight, when he pulled into the driveway.
another way, would be to sis infront of the car and have someone turn the steering wheel and look for any movment f you havnt already done this
with the sas when I did mine I noticed that you got alot of understeer because of the narrow front axle, this would be even more so running swampers. Either fit wheel spacers or use the wide track kit, it makes the steering so much better.
Check the free play in the steering box itsell. The arms wont give that much free play unless somthing is broken.
Get under the truck while someone else turns the steering wheel back and forth, look for any thing that has movment in it.
The rubber flex joint may not be brocken but if the sharft is being streched apart the metal pins will not be making contact, this will produce a lot of slop.
Hope this all makes sence.
I went out this morning and pulled the wholething down and put it back together all nice and tight (U-bolts, steerarms, tierod ends etc ), checked the steering box ,steering shaft rubber thingy all seems fine. Now it all seems that it has tightend up a bit, just slight play in the steering but it still takes a lot to turn a corner
What next?????

just because you pulled it down and tightened all the bolts mightnot helkp much as often it is the bearing that are gone. Try getting someone to turn the wheel and look to see if the steering arm makes an arc movement. That would mean that it moves befor the wheels do. Also check the chassis for cracks/ Loose bolts/Worn bush, around the arm that connects the steering box arm to the relay rod (down to the double arm). I am running the chaos double arm and have had no troubles with it.
dunno if it has been mentioned yet but check if the box is tight against the chassis, wen i did mine i was slack and diddnt crush tube the chassis and the chassis crushed and then the steering box was loose wen i tightened it back up it was all sweet
