Yeah I know the guy. For progress on his SAS try here.

Only thing he has "broken" is the inner needle bearing of one of his hubs, allowing the CV to shit itself through vibration. Recent radiator probs as well but I suppose you get that in Texas heat after 8 yrs with crappy water to fill your radiator with.

who said anything about vitaras??

sorry for the confusion - I'm impressed, the man has nuts of solid rock - I mean 'wrong' like 'fully sick'. I wouldn't do it to a sportage to start with because I know the aftermarket support just isn't there - I like being able to walk into ARB and say '2 air lockers please' and knowing they'll have them in stock on the shelf - not something I have to dream about for years. doing it all yourself from nix is ballsy. economically suicidal, but gutsy.

You're dead right there. Wife has a sportage, thing has been 100% reliable for us, only thing that has stopped me from modding it is having to be a philanthropic pioneer in the development area. I had a contact in Sydney that had a competing sportage, but he gave up and got a gu. It will happen, but yeah, only the most basic of aftermarket items will be available.

Hey Gary, have you seen those flares from Talon? (no I'm not taking the piss either) Saw some on a sportage up here a while ago. Any progress on the fully bolt in lift kit? (suspension)

Area54,

Have you got a link to those flares? Still need something up front to make me legal.

The spring lift has been in for a while, still playing with wire diameters/number of turns equations for the front, but gradually getting it down to what I want. Takes about 4-6 weeks for every attempt, then drive it/test it and try again.....

A link you may be interested regarding aftermarket products. :D :D :D

I've had it out with the Vic Zook guys once since the lift/tyres have gone on, and didn't disgrace myself.

Yeah Gonzo, met him about 4 years ago at battle of the states comp.

Gary, I was able to track the flares down from my local bodykit supplier, they were cheap too, around 400 bucks for front and rear, straight from the Talon catalogue.

Hey Gary what ratio's do you have in your diffs. I'm interested to to see if they'll fit my rocsta it's got 4:11's and it would like to crawl a bit slower . I'll try the wreakers to see if the bolts and splines are the same. I've found alot og Mazda parts cross over but I haven't tryed Kia yet. When I spock to Asia they said this is all they do unless you get a deisel and they have 3:9 worse :?

As far as I can make out 4.778:1 (from the Kia Global site, and other sources) but according to the brochures 4.625 or so...but there again the brochure said I had a 65 litre tank. It is only 60 litres....

As far as compatability I am not sure who originally made Asia's third members. If it was Mazda, you could look around at some RX7's R/P's for the rear and MX5's for the front (Mazda corporate diffs). Click on the thread I left for Area54 above re lockers and other aftermarket bits and keep your ear to the ground. It would be useful if you could visually compare the 3rd's to see if they are the same as the Sporty (I reckon they might be), or post some pics here and I'll compare them to what I have.

The ducks guts would be to get a lower low ratio tcase gearset, would maintain roadability and give a bit more grunt to the lower speeds.

You can go too slow though... (1 meg WMV file)

That vid is scarey to close.
My diffs are made by mazda and are dana copies. Crawler gears would be good but I'm not holding my breath. I just need more grunt so I'm thinking about a bolt on belt driven supercharger with a clutch on the front for when I come to somthing step :) About $250 from an import wrecker.

Note: Three alternate comebacks available.

1.
Might i suggest trying the southland carpark then - there's quite a few speedbumps in there - that should slow things down a bit.

2.
I guess that's what happens when you drive a car with no gearing options.

3.
Next time ask your mum to pack the groceries in the back a bit slower then.
