lower range

Post by big red »

apparently marks have revised their low gear set so now the big question is,
rockhopper or marks :?:
strength ? noise ? ratio ? longevity ?

The Marks revision was only small and had nothing to to with the mating gear surface, but a diferance in the Auto, Man trans case making them universal.

how much longer will you have to go in the wheelbase ?
i heard they were doing duals in iceland by using just the low range section or something and with one rockhopper getting 170 ...how low will yours go ?
it all sounds expensive :?

With the allowance 2 to 1 for the convertor and with everything in low I will be at 334 to 1, but with my new tires it will be pegged back a bit..
The T-cases are still being built, along with the adaptor, will let all know when finished.
As for wheel base, YES. :D

Thats the beauty with twin cases he doesn't need to run that low all the time, probarbly run most of the course with just the one case engaged and when he really needs it throw the second one in.

The new GU gears from Marks supposedly include backlash eliminators. Mark Hardman decided to incorporate them after doing the Pajero gears and our research into what this sub gear actually does. I got tech imfo from Mitsu in Japan which says this part (which is incorporated in the factory gearset) is there to keep tension between the input and idler gears and stop any slop (and hence gear rattle). Also the engineer said it helps to prevent chain slop and supposedly makes low range engagement a bit smoother. In the case of the Nissan it also has a sub gear on the idler to low range gear. Apparently some GU auto's developed a very slight ting at idle from the t/case so the sub gears (backlash eliminators) are now to be incorporated. We asked him to incorporate them in the Paj gears and the feedback is that they are smooth as silk (engagement & idle noise). They don't put these things on from the factory if they didn't have to...................

finally got them installed, very quiet.
after they were installed i filled up at the servo around the corner and tried em out , was in forth gear before i left the pumps.
it will take off in 5th low with no clutch riding.
ratio is 3.74:1 so mine is now 73:1.
I really hated riding the clutch in steep shi t and driving faster than the winch rope so this will fix that but on the downside i will have to use highrange a hell of a lot more.

yep, nissan tcases have always been too high, can't see the point in having a low range that you could use around the city streets.

took some speed reading with the GPS and used 3000 revs as the gps doesnt register below 1 kmh.
low range...
1st...6.
2nd...11.
3rd...19.
4th...28.
5th...33.
highrange...
1st...24.
2nd...42.
3rd...70.
spent a lot of time in high range as low is only useful up to 20 kmh unless you rev the ring out of it.
it feels like i've gained two gears lower but lost the two higher gears.
Found it pretty awesome to be spinning wheels like mad and going nowhere and then just chuck it back to first and let it idle up
loved the down hill speed for the really steep stuff.
loved the way it just eases over the rocks without the chassis bouncing down onto the rocks.
found it hard to get back into first unless i was nearly stopped, used to do this before but its worse now.
found it really easy to climb stumps when posing :finger:
