Removing rear sway bar

How many people here have their rear sway bar removed? Would it be safe to say that most people that take their pajeros off road remove them? I have an NG and am thinking of removing it.

Does it make much difference?

Lastly, it is a simple job?

I drive my car to work each day (not very far) so I wouldnt want to be driving a car that handled like a ship.

Relatively easy job - took about half an hour

Made very little difference to SWB (but running H/duty springs)

Daily driver no probs - just remember it was never meant to corner like a race car.

I just remove the bolt that attaches it to the chassis before i go offroad.

i have searched extensively on the net to find if sway bar quick disconencts (pin style) are legal in Qld or not - ie. not covered for insurance.
ideas?

Andrew,
I removed mine about 6 months ago and it made
a big difference off road and hardly any diff onroad and
as far as I know my suspension is standard.
Didn't take to long to remove, had to remove passenger
side wheel and bottom of shock,if I remember correctly.

As you loosen up the bushings on your trailing arms, and your flex improves, there is a possibility that the bar will actually remove itself.

The brackets that attach the sway bar, to the trailing arm brackets bent and sheared on my truck, so the sway bar was attached to the frame, but all connections to the axle had been removed.

a mate had a prado and removed his rear sway bar. he also mentioned no difference on road and much improved off road ability.

Looking forward to doing my next mod.

PS being from Wollongong im assuming your avitar is from Nowra??

Grant,

Aren't you worried that you will catch the sway bar if you just remove the bolt?

Saw a jackarooooo couple of years ago at a 4by day who removed the bolts to do a course made up of old tyres. He caught the rear sway and bent it backwards under the car on one side. No damage from what could be seen but I think he would have had to use Franks method of the grinder to get it off. Bent it real good.

I did a similar search and found no reference to legislation making it illegal - in any jurisdiction anywhere. But lots of speculation suggesting it could be illegal. :?

I guess someone has to bite the bullet and call Qld Transport? Or if I ever get a body lift done, I'll see if they say anything when I get it inspected. :)

I am just staying within my insurance companies guidlines.... Yeah, it could get caught on something and break it, but i am sure that a rear swaybar is very easy to source..... :lol: Having no rear swaybar makes bugger all difference on road, but in my shorty, with 5 people in it, swaybar unbolted, it seems far too roly... even with the shocks on the hardest setting... At the end of the day, i am not wealthy enough to pay for the injuries to my passengers if something goes wrong! Hense why we have insurance and hense why my rear swaybar is still there..... Same reason i dont drive on road with the 35's on!

Call me old (23) but i would much prefer knowing that i am fully insured at all times!

insurance company guidelines are that all mods have to be road legal right?

Dont remove the bolt from the frame... remove it from the axle. It is the easiest thing to do and you can bolt it back together in no time.

Actually my avatar is from Landcruiser Park,went there 4 the day while
visiting some relo's in Caboolture. Without the rear bar removed I doubt
we would have made it up the section in the pic. Kept up with 3 Landcruiser's,
2 with front lockers,although I did kick up heaps more dust
and lift more wheels than them ;-)
