G'day,
I am tentatively considering replacing the 2F in my FJ60 with a EB Ford Motor (4.0L EFI Straight 6). I can pick up a motor with loom and all the bits for around $500.00 and a conversion kit for around $1300.00. I won't be doing the work myself but I think I can get the labour done fairly cheaply. The main concern is all the other cost's will I need to pay for engineers cert's or anything else? As a side note what are the opinions of such a conversion?

For $1800 for the motor and install kit with EFI etc whats wrong with that ???
Allow another 500 or so to install you have a 120Kw at 4000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm along with easy access to newer motors in the future and a very simple engineers certificatie (after all your swapping one 4 litre 6 for another with an install kit )
what kind of 350 install could you do for that kind of money ???

It all comes down to $$..
if you have a bit more to spend, then a Chev, or even a Holden V8 (SS Front cut maybe?) or even a complete smashed VN commodore out of tradingpost or auctions for the V8 and goodies would be a better option..
but if your on a budget, that sounds like a good cheap option. It will do the important thing - GET YOU BACK ON THE ROAD!

By choice I would go the Toyota 1UZ route. Still 4 litres but heaps more potential.

Half cut $2,000.00
Exhaust $2,500.00 (its pretty trick)
Oil system changes $500.00
Flywheel machining $500.00
Fuel system $500.00
Sump change $500.00
Engineer $500.00
Sundry $1,000.00
You could save $2,000.00 on this by cutting a few corners (particuallaurly on the exhaust) but still it ain't cheap to swap motors.

It all depends on if the poor dude is POOR and cant afford a 4000kw V8 and just wants his car to get runnin on the cheap...
The main reason the conversion is Economy. The more tired the 2f gets the more juice it sucks. I was thinking along the lines of the 4.0L Ford because it has 348NM of torque and around 150KW in stock form. The engines are cheap and parts are easy to get as well as being a much more economical engine. But, in light of suggestions I guess I'll need to research a little further into what doesn't suck too much juice and what has a little more poke at the same time, maybe an even later model motor (AU??) something out of an XR8 perhaps? or a later model V8.
I"m not looking to set groundbreaking quatermile times but more something that doesn't leave cost a billion bucks every time it starts up.

Then have a look for a front cut on a V8 falcodore.. Comes with engine box and all..
would be the cheapest way probably.
But as someone else said most conversions still cost $5-skys the limit,000 with others doing the work..

Thanks, guy's I'll have a look around and see if I can get an estimate on labour. A potential Turbo 6, (excellant suggestion love mud) or a modern V8 possibly on the cards. I'm semi broke so mega bucks is not able to be spent but th 2F really needs a rebuild, so rather than put the money into it I thought I'd improve on it, just that little bit.

if you are putting in a ford engine why would you overlook the xd falcon engine that way the 60 will still feel the same when it is doing your wallet over a few times at the servo (and that way if you gotthe whole xd for the all of 300 bucks u get them for u can put a cigarette lighter in every door)

No diamonds in my system just every horsepower I can get out if it. Plus it sounds SWEET.
Now the system is complete I am sending it out to be ceramic coated to get that last llittle bit.

considering you payed more for the exhaust than the halfcut i can see why people think it was a bit pricey. and so can i when i payed alot less for my car then you did for an exhaust. but, if i could afford to do the mods i wanted to my car i could spend alot of money too so i can see your point about paying for quality etc.

Keep the 2F - just rebuild it (or an exchange short motor) - rings, bearings, mild cam, re-do the head for unleaded fuel if you want, 350 Holley, extractors, 3" system, maybe a HD clutch - a lot cheaper and no need for certification, insurance alterations, modified radiator to keep cool, adapter kits etc etc - many hidden costs.
I know it's tempting to do an engine swap and some of the benifits it offers but if you're on a budget and for easy of maintenance and not to mention swapping can cost more than the vehicle is actually worth.
Having done the mods on the 2F donk they pull like a train for the average user and with good economy. But it's your money.

With the price of petrol going thru the roof ATMO, I'd be inclined to go for a good LP gas setup (twin mixer), and rebuild your 2F to get the best out of it, eg bigger cam, higher comp pistons, bit of head porting (just basic stuff) as gas engines run better this way.
I reckon theres a lot of potential there, and would be cheaper to run than what you have.
If you are planning on making a super beast out of it later or like modifying things for fun , then converting to something else has more merit.

You could have got a lumpier cam or a trick Apexi Power FC computer and changed whatever ebgine shit you liked on th go till you blew something up :
Looking around I've decided to go with an AU falcon 4.0L six. 157 KW with 357NM of torque will be good enough for me, with plenty of easy power to be had with a little bit of work down the track.
Does anybody know of a good mechanic that would do this sort of work around melbourne. I spoke to Castlemaine Rodshop and they're busy up until next year.

It looks like the mechanical and electrical is gunna be around 2k
so a total conversion - around 3k. With the real cost probably at 4k by the time the extras add up .
Even if it is to a puss bucket ford, it's gunna be a lot nicer than a puss bucket 2f.
