with 31x10.5"s on my Mav the wheels dont seem to come anywhere near the edge of the flares. But ive seen GQ's with std looking tyres come right out to the edge. Are they just bigger tyres ? eg 31x12.5" ...Or is there some 'option' with the GQ's like longer axles etc ?

I believe the wide wheel option was with rims of different offset and flares used.
The 'normal' option was with cheesecutters and no flares.
Dont think 31x12.5x15 are a common size.. or even available...
Patrols came standard with 28s and 31 inch tyres.
33's are problaby the perfect compromise.. thou on a std heigh tpatrol - you'd have more trouble fittin them without any lift on it eg 2 inch lift is perfect for 33's.
Or join the bad boys league with 5 inchs plus of lift and over 35's
If you want my 2" suspension, you can have it (4 shocks, 4 coils) for $250. Perfect for fitting 33x12.5x15s but I don't think you will want to fit the 33s on 7" rims. I just bought some 8s for mine.

PS: The wide wheel option on a GQ was the 7" rims with 31x10.50x15 rubber (Bridgestone Duelers) with the factory flares fitted. There was no different wheel option if flares were fitted. Only white steelies or the Nisan alloys that were also 15x7. the wide pack was std on an ST.
The skinny option was usually reserved for DXs and the like, and was split rims and 205 rubber I think on a 15x6 rim.
GQ Safari High Roof, MANUAL, 33s, 3" lift, CD, Nardi Wheel, bullbar, rack. 2.5m of sheer intimidation...
GQ's all came with a 31" or 32" tyre. Opions where 7.50R16 (32" or just under) mounted on 16x6 split rims, Fact wide wheel pack 10r15 (31x10.50R15) on 15x7jj. Series 2 GQ's also had 16x6 steel rims 235/75R16 and 265/75R16 on 16x8 alloys (TI).
Mav's came out with the 16x6 steel wheels also, but had the 205R16, and to make this work they came fitted with 3.9CW&P (diff gears).
All Nissan rims are stamped NISSAN.
The 16x6 rims where also on the Navara's.
Pretty sure this is right.

The standard GQ rims that don't stick out much are also a bitch of a rim to have if you go offroad and in remote areas, and you like fixing tyres yourself. They have no taper in the middle area of the rim (not sure of its exact name) Once you have broken the bead you have to keep pushing down on the tyre with a lot of force to get it to move along the flat surface.
In short the rims are a bitch to remove tyres from. I tried to remove a tyre from one of these shit rims. We couldn't move the tyre down the rim. We had 2 hi lift jacks on the sidewalls and were jacking under the front of a landcruiser, but all we could do was lift the cruiser off the ground. A tyre shop took 45 minutes to get it off, and have had problems with those rims in the past.
Best to find some of the wide option wheels, which don't have this problem.
Anyone looking for a set of 15x7 nissan rims? going very cheap.
33's shouldnt be a problem. As the utes came with 7.50R16 also some came with 235/85R16 which are both about 31.8", and a 33x12.5R15 measures 32.7". Specs taken from BFG site (AT's).
This is withen in 15mm of the biggest tyre fitted to the model, so it should be sweet.
OR go the 33x10.5R15 and they will even go on the factory 15x7" rims.
I have a GU with 35" x 12.5 R15 tyres on ROH white steel rims. I am currently trying to get an engineers certificate with the 35's in NSW. The RTA only allow a track width increase of 25mm. The ROH steel rims have a -ve 22mm offset and the standard GU rims have a +ve 10mm offset. So that makes a total of 64mm increase in track.
I have rung ROH in Sydney and they told me that the rims I have are made for the Nissan and they have been selling them for years, and they do not make any other offset for a Nissan. A zero offset rim would solve all the problems.
GU's only came out with 16's. on the tyer placard it is writen that the rims are not to be any smaller.you may have trouble there. there is very little clearance between the brake calipers and rim so keep your wheel bearings thight, i think i will run into the same problem with rim off set.
You can run 15" rims on early GUs, later ones have bigger brakes so you either stick with 16" or bigger rims or grind abit off the calipers.
Changeing the offset has nothing to do with the rim dia. It is how far the bolting sureface is away from the center line of the rim.
