Cut quater panels on 80 series

Thinking about cutting the quarters on my 80 series so I can do a custom tube rear end and pick up heaps of departure angle. Has anyone done it, got pics etc.

I have the barn doors and was thinking of trimming quarters at the level of the doors. I reakon will give me 4 - 6 inches more on the corners.

Hey fella - I'm in the same boat - just deciding the line to take is a PITA...

Make sure you chop the chassis rail back to door level - then there's departure angle!!! :D

I have this in mind for my rear bar and have had the idea put to me by my mechanic/mdiciations madman...

Reckon it could go either way - make the rear look tough as or very un bling... :D

never seen this done on an 80, but i would be keen to see it!! i have seen a fair few gq's with the chop and it looks tops and also good departure angle...

Will someone take the plunge and do it.
I may be close as I needa fix the quarter anyway and I think if I boof it again before it gets fixed I may as well cut them. It looks simple to do but I'm unsure how it will look as a finished product.
The tube bar on the green 80 ute in 4WD monthly a few issues back looked cool.

So where are you goint to chop the chassis at?

Thats my greatest concern... But The departure angle would be ace.

I have a boofed LHS rear quater (damn Vic Range track!! grrrrrr!) and want to achieve the same thing... just a matter of $$$

Can you be more creative with the photo and shpw us the rear view, and if it's not to much to ask add a single tube bar that wraps back to the wheel arches . I have no idea, or the programs to do it and you have done such a good job.

Dont think I will worry about the chassis as then I have to stuff about with Towbar etc etc. I ALWAYS seem to scrape the corners and have made up steel replacement ends, but they have actually reduced departure angle. But hey I dont rip em off all the time, and I can smash em on rocks without damaging the quarters.

I am looking to get the corners up a bit more so than the rear itself. If I was going to get rid of the towbar I would cut the chassis back to the line of the rear door. (Outside skin)

Intersting.. still retained the 4 doors thou .. just merely chopped the rear end to give it a better departure angle..

Expensive option !!!!

Unless you're handy with a welder and a grinder :D :D

Yeah, its hard to tell whether the bigger tyres are making it look shorter or if it has had the bottom of the quarters removed and the shadow is the chassis.

Have spotted this 80 series before. Its from last years Malyasian Rainforest Challenge. It certainly does look like it has been shortened. Looks like a pajero rear side window.

Hey,
I got the bumpers and wheel carrier off and had a goodish look and reckon I'm gunna get a 45mm dia tube bent to fo from wheel arch to wheel arch that will sit on top of the chassis at the back. Another bended pipe will sit on top of the side bits to fill in the gap and pick up wheel carrier on LHS. I reckon then I'll get a plate with angled ends that is welded to the bottem side of the pipe at the rear and bolted where the towbar bolts on. I will also put 2 eye bolts and use them as tow points and extra bolt on places and try to brace the pipe back to the chasis near the wheel.
At this early stage it appears no cutting of panels is required, although i"m booked in at panel beaters to get quarter fixed and may cut them off, to achieve this and cutting the chassis at the end is not on my agenda. Like Pete, I'm only trying to protect the quarters and will improve the departure angle heaps by simply removing towbar.
Will keep you posted.

We nearly have 2 rear bars finished without cutting the quarters and will if we can post some pics when were done.

I'm making these bars with MYTTUF and reckon they are going to look pretty trick and fairly tough. Using 60 mm pipe with 5 mm wall so it can handle a fair bit of punishment but also be used as a small air tank to back up the ARB compressor. The pipe has been cut into the rear chassis rail to also add heaps of strength across the rear end. Also welding spindles in bar for wheel/jerry can holders.

Hopefully post some picks early next week as I don't have a digital camera. Stay tuned...........

Here's some pics of the rear bar My dad has made. It has been finished now and has twin pivots. He's also thinking of making some to sell, maybe. Just got to test the current design and fine tune it.

Here's some photos of the rear bar on my 4b that myself and MYTTUF fabricated. Same as MYTTUF's except for the extra reverse spotties and the spindles for the wheel and jerry can carriers. ;)
