Steering "clunk" - 80 series

Post by slowhilux »

Just noticed a clunking noise this arvo. it only happens in one spot, about 1/2 - 2/3 of a turn to the right. Got the old man to turn the wheel while i was under it, but buggered if i could pin point where its coming from!! All the TRE's seem fine (cant get any play out of them), steering shaft from firewall to box is OK (no play), and theres nothing rubbing on anything!!! :x :x . Which leads me to think that its the steering box itself .

Anyone able to shed some light on this??

I'm in the same boat - box is stuffed! I dropping into a hard walled bog hole a month or so ago - looks like it created a soft spot...

Coming back from Sydney this weekend gone - I had a couple of moments where the car lurched left real hard from bump steer but the steering wheeel didn't move at all... Now the box is very leaky.....

Damn they are $$$ to replace/rebuild...!
