help with WT drive shaft flanges
help with WT drive shaft flanges
replacing my rear diff centre, just hit the same problem as bigsteve in this thread
.. diff centre i pulled out of a WT diff has the larger sized flanges, the original transfer case and rear tail-shaft (87/88 WT) has the smaller flanges - no way i can get drive to the rear diff.
what options do i have?
- is it possible to pull the flange off the diff centre and replace with the old one?
- can i buy another rear tail-shaft (with larger flange), pull it apart and make a mongrel? will the splines match? will something break?
- buy another diff centre? $$$
- anything else???

I got around that one by taking the rear most piece of the driveshaft and swapping it out with one that has a bigger flange to mate with the diff side of it. I didn't feel like f-ing with the diff, and swapping out a u-joint was pretty quick. I had both size flanges in the garage at the time...
My tires were rubbing in the front, so I trimmed the hood, and now they're fine...

that's the option that i like, but unfortunately i don't have a spare lying around. if anyone around newy's got one that i could pick up fri nite or early sat morning lemme know....
otherwise we're gonna try changing the flanges, cos i've got one of those that fits. does this mess with anything on the inside of the diff? is there anything i need to know before we try this?

The flanges are interchangeable ... all the same shaft size and spline count. The pita is getting the nut undone (the are tight) a rattle gun may be nessecary as you dont really want to be using an impact driver (thy type you hit with a hammer) as it may disturb the pre-load on the pinion bearing.. From memory its a 27mm socket that is needed.
When you put the other falnge back on you will not want to do it up super tight .. again as it may upset the pre-load on the pinion bearing (this affects the way the diff gears mesh with each other) Make sure that you re-stake the nut on the pinion (the pinon shaft has a little indentation in it for the nut to be "locked" onto by knocking the thin bit of the ring into .. to stop it backing off to easily
It sounds hard, but in reality it's just little bit fiddly and your unlikley to actually stuff anything up in any major manner if your at least a little bit careful ..

you could allways buy the widetrack xfer that I have and if your front diff is wrong then buy one of those too.
I have a spare widetrack flange. from the empty carrier that you saw in the garden shed.

shhhh.. u'll get me in trouble!!
nah, layto's a good mate, spent hours working on my junk wit me
can't get the damn flange nut off, some idiot ( ) hammered the locking tab in too far while trying to get it out
gonna take it to one of his mates and try a rattle gun on it tomorrow morning, but the way murphy keeps interrupting i'll still be 2byin tomorrow why everyone else is 4byin

thanks for the offer ashley, but prefer not to rebuilt the x-fer again if this stuffs up, i might give ya a buzz and see if u've got a rear tail-shaft so we can make a mongrel one, or maybe that and a flange for the x-fer
if i find that murphy guy i'm gonna borrow avgas's BMG and take him out
Just between me and you, I actually really dig the Megatwon, but if anyone asks, I'm going to shitcan it as much as possible! :D
got it off with a metre long breaker bar, another metre of tube on the end, me on the brakes (up on a hoist) and two guys giving it some fetch thanks heaps to layton for his help and setting us up with his mate for the use of hoist and tools
everything fits now, aside from being hard to get off, the flange swap went fine. nice to have rear wheel drive back, it's like having power steering
layton also did a over the phone diag of my engine not running last nite, vacuum hose off the dizzy something (regulator not sure) .. is good to have mechanical friends
gratuitous sucking up for next time something breaks
