Hilux 2.8l or 3.0l Diesel + Turbo?
I am Replacing the engine and gearbox in an '85 Hilux Extra Cab and cant decide whether to buy a 2.8L to fully rebuild and balance or buy a low km 3.0L and whack it straight in. Either way it will end up with a Dynamic Turbo +/- Hi flowed, and a bit of work to the fuel pump. Cost is much the same as I will do most of the rebuild myself.
Which is a better motor and has any one had experiance putting either of these into an older hilux; any problems?

I think either conversion has its good and bad points but if it were me and i wanted deisel i would go for the 2.8 mainly because they are everywhere and parts can be easily obtained where as the 3.0 is not as available.
The biggest prob you will have is that the engine mount brackets on the chassie wont line up.

I was also told that the 2.8 won't bolt up to the early gearbox. i have a 2.4 and aparently the 2.8 runs a different flywheel from memery. i know change flywheel you say but the crank is different on is 6 bolt and the other was 5 i think. All this lead to the gear box not bolting up.May just be a cause of machineing the flywheel down a few mm or swopping the box.
At the time i just needed the truck back on the road and could'nt aford the f*****g around.

I bought the ute without a motor, gearbox and transfer so am looking to fit complete motor with matching box and transfer. Also the 3.0L (5L) motor is not EFI so no computer. Some come with EFI but most are just mechanical fuel pumps. Just looking for suggestions as to which is a stronger motor and better performer in terms of torque, revs etc.
