What's a good muffler?

Post by Hardy »

I had some work done last year on my 4.0's exhaust, not real happy with result.
(1999 model - has the revised inlet manifold, std cats, K&N filter, Unichip)
The muffler used is a "Tri Flow"
Not a straight though like I assumed.
It makes a bit of a whirry whine above 3500 rpm, sounds like I have blower under the bonnet (wish)
Installing this muffler cost me about 4kw on the dyno, undoing almost half the good work of the Unichip.
The pipe used was still 2 1/4 inch.
Also, the hangers positioning is out, causing the rubbers to either break or jump off.

The solution in mind is to fit a good straight through, along with 2 1/2 pipe - from end of "Y" to start of muffler, but not after as I will keep the back section (2 1/4" with a nifty little resonator at the end)

So 2 big questions:

A. Is there a brand/model straight-through muffler that youse blokes have had luck with?
B. Is there a down side to my plans - could A std "Y" TO 2 1/2" TO straight-through muffler TO 2 1/4" TO resonator SYSTEM cause too less back pressure OR would it work like a charm?

Thanks,
Hardy

Yeap, the Unichip did make a differance - about 8kw (with bigger tyres)
But then I put this stupid exhaust in and dropped about 4kw.

Now all that's happening is the car's using more petrol as the Unichip fights to overcome the exhast handicap.....
