Actually very few have a body number that is any different to the Chassie number. A Hilux or 4Runner has no Body Number at all only a Chassie Number and then the same Chassie Number on the compliance plate. The body has no coresponding number stamped on it. So in theory if you had a White 84 model single cab and was just changing the cab due to damage or rust and the new cab was also white its as simple as changing the compliance plates as well. However this is not legal but it is common practice with Toyotas.
thats what i was thinking ruff, i couldnt find a body no listed anywhere so if i swapped bodies noone would ever be the wiser, just dont want ti to come back and bite me later

I just ran down to my car and I could not see a body number and there is not one my rego details. Only says wagon 5 seater. I do want to change the colour though.
ruff you are right, but like you say the numbers should match, swap the cab and they wont. I was more getting at the fact the VIN is found in 2 places.
If you change the ID tags that would fix the problem, but it is up to the individual to do that if they wish. Yes it is the easiest way, you will probably never be caught but i think in the case of a 4runner to single cab you would be pushing it.

There is no body number that coresponds with any ID tag on the vehicle. There is a number on the Radiator suport Panel but it is not recorded anywhere. However this wont work for a 4runner to Single cab swap as your compliance plate says its a 4runner and its 5 seater so you will have trouble convincing DOT that it is still a 4runner.
Spazbot, If someone was to get suspicious on the body you use there are other ways to check this including seatbelts and dash items as there are a lot of parts that are dated and numbered. As long as the body is the only thing you use then you should never have a problem.
Why dont you ring QLD tranport, they will give you a list of engineers & all the info u need. This will save getting the wrong information from 20 differnt people. Also, when you are talking to someone get their name & try to deal with them exclusively through the whole project. HEED THIS ADVICE AS THIS WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU.
Qld transport will have the final say with registration so it makes sense not to work against them.

DOT in qld don't inspect written off vehicles to assess whether they were repaired or re-birthed and haven't done for a long time. The only place I know that can do it is fowles auctions and speaking from experiance it is an expensive drawn out process. Prices are based on the age of the vehicle and if they don't like what you have done then you fail and have to pay to try again. I don't see how this affects you as your car is not on the write off register. As others have said speak to someone who knows what they are doing and can help you not us Mondays experts
