Hey guys,

Having issues finding a replacement alternatior for my Mav, now its a 89 model but has the dual pulley on the front for the dual radiator fan belts. Everyone Ive rung can only get the single pulley model ($170) except for one mob that wants to charge me $712!!! for a two pulley model.

Now I 'hope' that someone else has had a similar problem and can help me out with someone that can sell me a two pulley model for like $200

BTW im on the South side of Brissy.

Swap the pulleys over. I have a feeling they use the same rotor in the alt, and the only difference is the pulley.

They are fairly simple to rebuild yourself, I just finished a complete rebuild on my hilux alt. New stator, rectifier, bearing, brushes, rotor was good. Cake. Petrols are easy as they have no messy vacuum pump.

Just convert it to a Bosch alternator. Did mine the other week , the twin pulley bolts straight on . Cheaper to rebuild next time. Just need to change the wires.

Hrmm...thats interesting because ive just had a look under the bonnet and found that it is already a bosch alternator. Is there any specific model I need to get ?

I replaced mine with a 200B/Bluebird bosch alternator, just need to drill out the rear mount from 8mm bolt to 10mm bolt.... been in there for years now. Only one fan belt though, havent tried to swap pulleys.

What's the output? I wouldn't mind a 110A or better unit in mine instead of the 85 or 90 (can't remember which) that it currently is.

Ive found a bosch alternator parts list.

Pretty sure double pulley will fit any bosch alternator.

my alternator has cooked,

its a 55A hitachi attached to a TB42E

i have called around a few places this morning and using the vague information on this thread, pieced together the following.

I can upgrade to a Bosch 120A alternator for a (??) commodore (some people say VT, some people say VL).

The original GQ alternator has a 3 leg bracket system.

The Bosch 120A alt for commodore will 'bolt up' but you will need to fit your twin pulley off the og hitachi.

You will need to chop the 3 wires from your loom that feed the standard hitachi and wire it up to the new Bosch unit.

The price for the Bosch unit is around $330

someone mentioned that the 120A alt will deliver unreliable amps at idle, is this so ?

ill confirm that all this info is correct, as it unfolds.

my 120amp unit shows around 12.5 volts at idle and increases to a bit over 13 just off idle. This is just using the standard nissan volt guage i haven't checked it with a miltimetre but it would be interesting, i will try and test mine

i used the bosch BXH1250, 120 amp, listed as being form a VS police special, but have also found that it is exactly the same as the one listed for the VT 5L (BXH1253), except different pulley on the front, which makes no difference as we pull it off anyway for the dual pulley. The VS police special has a standard single groove pulley, but as for being a straight bolt on, i'd like to know how, caus i ended up making a bracket for it to get the offset correct so the belts were perfectly (almost) straight.
Also they are extremly open cased for cooling, and as yet i havn't done any sloppy mud or water work, so dont know if this is a problem.

As for my volts they sit always on about 14 or 14.5, on the gauge in the dash, doesn't matter the revs (unless its below about 500). The BXH1250 and BXH1253 both have an idle output of 60amps (according to the specs), which is another reason i went for it. People need to watch out when getting a new bosch 120amp alternator installed as the Universal BXH12121 is an agricultural use alternator that although is well shielded from mud and water by not having much venting, it only puts out about 2 amps at idle, although i think it reaches it's 120amps at a slightly lower rpm than the VS/VT alternator

hmmm.

i hope this all makes some sort of sense

thanks for the info, very useful.

i was told by a 4x4 shop in vic that the VT spec bosch was a straight bolt on, but if it needs fancy brackets, i guess ill find out the hard way.

is it something you can easy shim out or does it really require a custom bracket from scratch ?

you got any photos of yours ?

To put the double pulley on, i made a a spacer for the between the alt and the pulley, so as to leave enough thread and also to help with the offset of the belt. I also machined sorta inside from the front of the pulley, so that i could get the nut to hold on with enough threads. i'm really not sure if i went about it correctly making a bracket, or if maybe i could have used spacers and stuff, cauz out of the box there are some spacers on it already, maybe could do something there. Ive got the engineers drawing of the alt, here is the section with the mounting, and the dimensions.

i seem to remember 80mm meaning something to do with the original mounting that is on the car, maybe 80 is the distance to fit between on the original mounting.........

I used an red motor 55A Bosche unit and just swapped the double pulley to it. Just ground about 5mm off the brackets to fit it.
