How Well do you know the 3.5l Rear Diff??

How Well do you know the 3.5l Rear Diff??
Lads,
My local Mitsi dealer has done some research and reckons that the LSD part of the factory locker is the same as the straight LSD.
He did some parts comparisons and pricings and it looks ( initially ) like I can buy new all the bits and bolt them into my LSD for around $600.00.
So..., my question is, to anyone who isn't sick of me yet, is the carrier for the LSD and LSD/Locker the same?( apart from the switch) and
is the LSD unit in the diff the same part in both diffs
I guess the questions could be simplified to..., can you fit the locking diff bits to the standard LSD to get a locking LSD.
Not withstanding requiring a shorter axel.

All is well and good but you will still need the left hand side axel to suit the locker. Mitsu priced me $800 plus freight for one and they have nil stock in aust.
Wreckers would not have one unless they had a locked diff in stock. I would highly doubt that a wrecker would sell the axel without the complete locker.
A complete locker from the wreckers will include a complete centre, switch, commpressor, axel, and wiring. Mine was $1400 but i sold the existing centre for $250. Cheaper than the cost of arbs.
Have you had any luck finding a complete locker?

Grant,
When you say "Well & Good" - does this mean the bits will bolt in or are you saying that even if I do get this going - I will still have to get an axel?
Maybe I can get a billit axel made for better that $800
I have a line on another locker and I haven't confirmed that Shane's on is gone.

Ok this should clear this issue up.
The same thing was posted on Trail Talk a while ago and is a discussion on the Paj Club Forum at the moment with the link to the original Trail Talk thread.
The parts your dealer is refering to is only half of the locking mechanism which is mounted outside the diff centre these are the external locking cam and actuator collar.
The rest of the locker mechanism is housed inside the diff centre with the other half of the locking cam and spring mechanism. The lsd clutch packs are also different to the lsd set up. The external parts of the locker will not bolt up to a lsd centre and even if they did they don't have the internal cam to engage (located in the diff centre).
It's easy to assume what your dealer has until you see a blown up diagram of the locker and lsd diff centres themselves then you can easily spot the differences and why it won't work. You can see why the left hand side axle is shorter than the lsd one as it would hit the internal locking cam.
From what Grant and Ian have done you need the locker diff centre, axles and compressor as a minimum and wire it up to an ARB or similar switch. The locker diff centre will bolt into the lsd diff housing even though they are different part no's.
Hope this clears it up.
Also I have seen Shane's locker when I visited and they are quite different to a lsd unit.

re
JTOP:
Did you have success cutting down the 3.5L lsd axel to fit the 3.5L locker.... I am interested because my lsd axels did not have enough spline.
I know you can for the 3.0L as redrocket has proven this.

Lads,
Thanks for all your input - The project has now gone to $1200 because, as our sage moderator says, the LSD pack in the locker is different (bugger!!) and they only want another $450 for the air pump.
So I think that I'll go for a second hand setup - at least I'll get the little pump and all the other bits for the same price..,
anyway I found one over east - but the Dude is asking me weather I want a 10 or 12 bolt one??? apparently he means the number of bolts required to bolt the centre to the housing. - I'll look tonight
I guess one thing that I learnt is that you can get all the bits if you blow up your locking diff.
I hope I can get one before PULP goes above $1.50

(hope the arb front locker gets here soon)

Yeah the ARB front locker is due out next month.
Be careful with the rear factory locker as they will confuse it with a 3.0 V6 one which are more common.
The differences are :-
- 3.0 V6 is 9" crownwheel, 28 spline 30.5mm diameter axles
- 3.5 V6 is 10" crownwheel, 31 spline 35.5mm diameter axles
BTW Shane was refering to another guy (not Grant) so his one is now sold (I spoke to him last night).

Ok, ill stop babbling off topic and try to source you a locker...
