Fitting a PTO Winch to a Series 3 Landrover

I have a 1976 SWB Diesel Landrover. I wish to fit a PTO winch. Can anyone tell me whether any / what modifications are required to the front of the vehicle to do this. I am sure the answer is yes but any details and experiences may make my exercise less painful.

What type of PTO winch is it? The most common types ive seen are the THOMAS and S.U.E (has a very wide drum) Normally you have to remove the panel that fits between the chassis rails just in front of the radiator panel. The PTO unit mounts to the back of the gearbox and the drive shaft runs between the LH Chassis rail and the gearbox to a bearing mounted just near the dash support piece. From here it goes into the back of the winch passing under the front chassis xmember (the one with the hole in it for the crank handle) There are 3 Universal joints--the one at the PTO end of the driveshaft is a slip joint as well..

The Winch sits in a cradle between the chassis rails and uses the bumper bar bolts to locate. The bumper bar then bolts to the front of the cradle.

Thanks Nick - I have not seen the winch but assume it is a THomas. Your advice makes sense. I already have a PTO fitted together with the selector assembly so at least some of the work is done.

Most Land Rover PTO winches (for series vehicles) were made by Bamford and rated to 6000lbs. They are the ones on the military IIA's and SIII's. The drive shaft for them runs under and just inboard of the LHS chassis rail. Apart from fitting the winch, there aren't many mods to fit the driveshaft.

Thanks Ben - all I know about the winch is that it did come from a Series 2A Military Landrover so I am sure you a re correct about Bamford being the manufacturer. Thanks for the information.

If it is a Bamford I have the photocopy of a manual for one if you are interested. May take a while to dig out though since it is in Australia and I am in Germany at the moment.

Thanks Ben - I know for sure it is from a Military Series 2A and the Bamford bit sounded familiar so I would certainly appreciate a look at the manual when you return to Australia. When I actually see the winch in a week or two I will know more about it. The seller did say it is in a mounting cradle so that will help.
