Holden V8 Starter motor question

Post by Screwy »

Hey,

Is it possible to use a starter motor out of say a VN, VP, VR, VS 304 commodore in a VB and earlier 308 motor?

I realise the commodore ones are smaller but will they still bolt up and work as u cant get the Older Holden ones new anymore unless u want to pay a fortune.

The other thing i noticed was that the commodore starters have 2 bolts the same size where as the Older Holden V8 ones have one small bolt and one big bolt.

This shouldnt matter but will the theads match up with the new bolts??

cheers

Yes the late VN reduction starters will bolt straight on and if you buy a brand new one it should come with the bolts. I know they used to anyway. Im pretty certain that both bolts are a different length to the early long bolt so you cant just use 2 of them. Also using any old bolt can cause problems as they are prone to working loose if the factory bolt is not used. You will notice on the factory bolt there is a knerled section near the bottom.

They are also great for cranking out of sticky situations on the starter as they have more tourque at a lesser current draw.

cool, i was gonna use the factory bolts in it but wasnt sure whether there was a difference in the threads.
Also as the commodores are a completely smaller and different looking starter i was unsure.

thanks for that. I feel like an idiot for buying a second hand one for $85 out of a HQ now.
I should of spent $130 and got a new commodore one
