A mate of mine had a nice black Wrangler for a while - suspension, body lift, 33" mudders, winch - I tried to talk him into competitions, offering to be his winch bitch, but he sold the damn thing instead!
What I'm getting at, it was a great toy for the weekend, but had bugger-all space for carting stuff - worse than my Paj, I reckon.
A lot of the 4x4s on this poll fall into that category (for me): nice fun on the weekend, but lack a lot of comfort and/or practicality.

Landrover didn't fit lockers to their coil rovers because in their words
" our suspension keeps our wheels on the ground so a locker is not required."
Thats the sort of answer you would expect from a company that quadrupled it's horsepower output over 40 years and continued to put it through the same weak pre war 10 spline diff!
That said the US version of the 90 with the inj.3.9 and external cage would get my vote over any factory uj munching,output shaft bending,front diff exploding tj heap of puss.

If you are going to do a poll and call it top ten 4wd and then give only 2 choices it's kinda stupid
1. Suzuki Sierra LJ (really put the big boys in their place, whether 10, 20)
2. Willys Jeep (the original)
3. Landrover Series II (may not have been the first but.....lets be honest it was waaaaaaaaaaaay better than series 1)
4. Suzuki Sierra 410-413 (as per #1 but we expect it now)
5. Nissan MQ patrol (big jump to all the previous japcrap before it)
6. Range Rover 2 door series 1 (unreliable crap but when they work they work pretty good)
7. Unimog (nuff said)
8. SWB BJ Cruiser (oldie but still does the job)
9. Nissan GQ Patrol (as per #5.. way in front when it came out)
10. Lada Niva (laugh... but it had a 5 link rear, coils with solid axle, full time 4wd with diff lock etc)

Who cares.. the lada niva has all that stuff... sure it wasn't in 1970 but wasn't that far behind.
Stop bragging we're sick of hearing rover people carry on about that stuff when even the bloody lada has it at $500 a car.

I (well Chad does but what is his is mine) currently own a GU 3l patrol which I LURVE (cd player, air con, power everything, nice ride) yet it doesn't compare to an old yank tank 2door jeep cherokee. EG I was following an 80 series cruiser, in my (ok Chad's)'81 Cherokee chief, it turned off, i went straight ahead, it ended up in front of me again at the top of the hill, all the guys in the chero were pissing themselves laughing. Not getting the joke, I asked what was funny? Chris de Brueys says the landcruiser took the chiken track. Still not getting the joke I go 'So?' Chrissy says 'You're in 2wd' Still not getting the joke again I say 'SO?!' Chris says ' They did the chicken track in 4WD!'

Fair enough FredE, I am sure you have a few more years in you yet.
My dad is in his 70,s has 2 4x4's and wheels nealy every day, he blew his diff lock just last week! he has been driving 4x4s since the early 50's jeeps , inters, land rovers, my mum used to to drive me to kinder in an old black 4x4 inter ute, I don't think the term soccer mum was used 40 years ago but with no power steering, no sycromesh and no power brakes, mabee Super Mum would have been a better term.
We would go up the bush on family picnics with family and freinds, and the range of cars was pretty cool (in hindsight) flaties, inters, land rovers, power wagons all maner of post war fourbie's.
We would camp out where ever we wanted, and when another group of 4x4's would come past, they would stop and have a cuppa and talk for a while, all the kids would play, it was top stuff, it was all very civilised back then.
There was no after market either, Mr Pomeroy had a Dodge with a winch and he was considered extreme ( I think that was where I developed my topless 4x4 fetish ) the only real accesory's I can remember were wheel chains, and a long length of hemp rope.
They where very happy times, very diferent to today, these days, if you put 10 kids in the back of an Inter ute and went rabbit shooting, with the shooters standing up behind the cab and the fetchers on the running boards (yes, every 4x4 worth its salt had running boards, and a steel dash!) you would be branded irresponsible, back then you were a king,

It ain't marketing. Jeep really has been kicking ass since WWII. I'm not bashing on the other manufacturers, but Jeep was first and best. A Rover or G500 that can maybe equal a Rubicon costs twice as much or more, and the aftermarket for those vehicles is very limited. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Ibex. They are pretty badass but again, dollar for dollar, a Jeep is your best bet.

I would have to say toyota as I have now owned 2 of them and had no major problems with them...my first was a 82 hilux with a 1 tonne tray but was a bit small for me being a single cab and found myself doing more for others(transporting stuff)than driving it myself....now I own a 82 forty series cruiser and think they are a good car to drive as well as to work on which I have done quite a few things with it over the last 3 months....
