idiot lights

Post by lowndsie »

can anyone tell me why i have the "brake" and "charge" idiot lights flickering on and off. It only seems to happen when it's over 3000rpm. It's a 95 feroza.
Both these lights are next to each other so i was hoping that it was just a short....

Any ideas because I'm not sure if I should be driving it or not.

Get it checked out by an Auto Elec as I think you may have either
1. A stuffed Alternator
2. A loose earth wire somewhere....read anywhere throughout your electrical system

My 89 Feroza has developed a similar fault. The 'BRAKE' light has been coming on for some time, but the 'CHARGE' light has decided to join the party and... you guessed it, the battery is not charging.

My current thinking is dead alternator as the lights do not surge with increased engine speed.

I'm putting down the weirdness with the dash indicator lights to the two diodes in the combination meter that govern their behaviour. I might have to go and think about this a little harder... wish me luck.

Time to fork out I think! :(

its usually a stuffed alternater.. get it rebuilt or upgrade to a bigger, more powerful one.. that'll solve most problems.

*puts Ferog's $0.02 into the piggy bank and goes back to stripping knuckles in the engine bay* :)

Annoyingly... the Alternator seems mechanically solid. Next trick; pull it out and 'fiddle' with it.

Does anyone have the part number for the bosch aftermarket alternator that bolts onto stock feroza? (55Amp) The bosch catalogue makes no mention of Daihatsu! :x

*EDIT*
---I think we have a culprit---

Nasty groove worn into alternator slip ring (~1mm channel)

Irregular wear on matching brush

Manual says... replace rotor.

During one of my rare brain explosions, had an idea that by swapping the worn brush with the good one i could get the alternator working again. Simple matter of removing the brush assembly, desoldering the brush restraints, swapping them around and resoldering. Still means that my slip rings are worn to bu99@^y... but the Feroza is back on the road. :D

Might be worth remembering as a field service for NDenso alternators. (for those who carry soldering equipment) It's working better than ever now... but for how long? (I'd better order that replacement!)

NOTE TO SELF: Watch for the idiot lights in future, I think they start coming on right as the brush contacts start to degrade.

I take it that there is a difference between the Widetrack and the Narrow Track when it comes to Alternators.

I thought mine was originally ?80Amp.

Is yours EFI ??

Or has it got to do with the extra electrical devices on the Wide Track version....ie Power windows.etc ??

There's no difference in capacity AFAIK between the two. Mine's got electric windows, mirrors etc (same as the widetracks) and is only 55 a/h from the info I've found.
