Hilux Q's ...
Considering buying a Hilux and like the mid-90's shape better, but when I'm ready to buy, I will prob only buy a mid-80's POS and then upgrade in 12 months and use the 80's model for parts.
My question is, is the 80's model's good bits (ie gearbox, t-case, diffs, steering, fuel tank, bar work, etc) swappable into the later model? Was the 90's model just a facelift as I thought or was it a major stuctural upgrade?
Also, SC, EC and DC chassis ... are they the same length/wheelbase or are they all different lengths? For example, if I buy and early SC followed by a late model EC, are LR tanks interchangeable or not? Are drive shaft lengths the same? Etc ...
C'mon Yota experts ... dazzle me!

Ok the parts from the 80's cab would probally not fit the mid 90 becuase they had a structual upgrade only the parts from 80 would probally fit up to 84's, 85-86 will fit up to 87's, 87 onwards would fit the mid 90 i think
dont know much about the chassis motor or gearbox, but the motor and transfer should fit

im fairly sure the 79-88 modls all have same wheel base. the 89-97 models have a longer wheel base in the EC but SC and DC are the same.
if i were you i would just start with something around the 90-92 model (same shape as mid 90's) and keep it/modify over time instead of buying a shitter for a year which may end up costing you quite alot of money.
as far as gearbox/motors/t-case/diffs etc.... most will be interchangeable but there are 2 types of t-case (chain/gear). btw 89+ diff housings are stronger.

Blair,
90 2.8D HILUX s/c
33" BFG m/t
90 2.8D HILUX s/c

That pretty much answers my questions.
You're prob right, I just thought if they were pretty much the same, it would be good to have all the extra bits and pieces to play with while still having a running vehicle.
An EC is what I would prefer for the extra room behind the seats so I might investigate the wheelbase issue further but otherwise, thanks.

Wheel bases are the same up to 88 but runners are different I think.
In the up to 84 models the diffs are weak as they have no trussing , but is good for more clearance under them. The really early ones didn`t even have free wheeling hubs, I`m talking early early ones here. They only had solid rotors on front and only four speed gear boxes but the t case is the one you want for twin cases. They do however have bigger wheel arches allowing for biggers tyres without trimming. Motprs were very small and very gutless.
84 to 88 had some trussing on diffs and i think a slightly different frame. They also had bigger motors in both the petrol and desiel and a 5 speed box. These also still only have the solid rotors but at some stage were changed to the current vented ones. Rear breaks were also still only the smaller drums. I don`t think rear breaks were upgraded untill the newer model came out in 89.
Some of this model had efi petrols but not untill late in the run (I think).
The newer model that came out in 89 and stopped in november 97 was basicly only a body and interior upgrade for the first year or two but then they had some more major upgrades consisting of.
Bigger rear drums, I`m not 100% when this happened.
deffently vented rotors up front, again not 100% when this happened.
at some time P/S was made standard.
Bigger motors in both petrol and desiel models. Late in there production years all petrols came with efi but was an opion the whole time.
Loads more trussing on front housing
Suspension was diffent with each new model (I think) as in spring rates and valving in shocks but I`m not 100% with this on the 84 to 98 ones but the early ones was.
If I was to buy a lux with compition in mind for it from day one I`d buy an early hilux and put 90`s running gear on it. This would be diffs, motor, gear box, twin cases, one old one newer, bla bla bla.
With the 89 to 97 model all single cabs and only the basic model twin cab had solid front diffs, all extra cabs, 4 runners and twin cab SR5`s had IFS front ends.
Only the 4 runners and the extra cabs had different wheel bases.

Thanks Guts, just what I was after. Consider me dazzled ...
I wasn't aware of the brake changes and housing upgrades but was aware of the various engine/gearbox/t-case combos. I did find that P/S came standard in late 91 and was also aware of some of the solid front/IFS models but the EC being IFS is news to me. :( No matter, SC it'll have to be.
I'm not after something to comp, just something that has some aftermarket upgrades and room to grow when i get bored.
So far I'll be looking at the 2.8D and add a turbo if it doesn't have one. If I find it's too gutless for my taste, i've also been keeping an eye on everyone else's post about Rover/Toyota upgrades but we'll wait and see.
You could always make it real easy for me and just sell me yours !!
Thnaks again, food for thought.
