OUTBACK CHALLENGE

Well Done to Laurie & Sean. They are experienced competitors that knew what was required to get home and even with a slower vehicle they still finished 8th. "Standard gets you home" is my motto and I believe Laurie's Hilux (suss mods are good!!) is proof of that. Well Done again.
I also hear that the protests are about people having points on their route card that is different from the finished results and not about any particular position. It has in the past been a very hard thing (scoring) to understand and will probably go on being so in the future. It's a pitty as it probably spoilt the end of a fantastic week for some.

Well done Jonesy. The results are outstanding and I believe only 24 points separate the top three. Didn't Bruce and Freddy do well! It seems the event is as tough as ever and consistency gets you thru', maybe a modicum of luck in the mud it seems. Why do we have to venture into such deep water as to drown a car? What does it prove!! Maybe the rules should limit water depth above mud to top of wheels!!!! and this allows for sinking mud after many vehicles and then there is less chance of vehicle destruction.
Well done Chipper and Huddy......AMV Rangies have now won four out of six OBC's. Peter T's workshop does a great job. Rangies first and second are still showing how good 20 year pommy 4WD's are.
Well done Chris and Neill, great race and just pipped at the post.
Cass is showing us he still is one of the best so well done.
I hope we catch up with all the goss at dinnet on Tues Night.
See ya from Smithy.

I tend to agree with you Mike, l dont believe there is a need for deep water stages in the event and as you said perhaps a maximum depth should be discussed and introduced for future comps.
well done to all who competed and to the top 3 teams awesome job cant wait to see the dvd of this years OBC i recon its gonna be an eye opener for sure
as for the issue with deep water......yeah im with you guys on this one.... i wasnt there but have been told of what occured to some of the vehicles (team KOWARI) the vehicles are made and built to be driven hard and fast and with stand all kinds of punishment, but deep water is a major safety issue... like its been stated that there shood be a maximum safe depth shood be put inot place...how thiswill be done i dont know. but to have spent a bucket load of time effort and money to get these comp trucks to were they are and have them drown in a deep water section is a bloody waste and isnt needed.. they arent made to be drivin in 8 to 9 foot of water no 4x4 is...especially ones with electric window systems... i recon if it is discussed and introduced it will get rid of a number of safety issues...which can only better the OUTBACK CHALLENGE in the future

if you had electric windows you would have them open before tackling deep water but i do agree on deep water...should be limited to headlight level at the deepest i reckon. 1.0 to 1.2 metres or so.
its one of the major reasons i dont want to do winch challenges

I agree with the ethos it should be tough on team and car but not to the point of deliberate destruction of a vehicle for those who make a simple error of judgement and it would depend if there was a safe option on the crossing point. Also if the competitions ethos thinks this is a resonable thing to occur within their comp.
If there isn't a thought that this reasonable it shouldn't be included deliberately. If there is maybe just an inclusion in the stage brief (there probably was) should clue the teams to find it. . As I would've thought this adds an element of team decision making which preys on fatigue and skill levels and does so surely to find the best most consistent truck/team pairing. Hard to say really don't know the circumstances involving Matt.
If it is a point of crossing that can't be guaranteed depth for all then again it should be assessed for the posibility of a no go. Obviously this means mud and yeah it has prolly been a point of conjecture to luck of the draw in who goes at it first etc from the previous years. Having not been there and just an armchair observer would there be enough DATA through experience on the current terrain to make a call before a single car does a course given mean average conditions.
Just wheel hieght on the smallest tyre size as acutal head light is hard to judge where wheel size is nearly going to be a guarantee. This also allows for some track wear but is not a guarantee as we all know. Some more than others. But what you can't guarantee is starting conditions.
There should now be enough data gathered on results to type of terrain stage and order of who ran what first and last to actually see any effect if any this had on final results. Just at a guess looking at previous years and the names that always seem to be there this is not a valid assumption as the same names are always at or around the top except for unforeseen mechanical problems.
I think it just proves the cream rose to the top. Well done to the winners

The mud is there to test us all, and some handle it better than others. I'm led to believe that some found deeper holes than others leaving them strandard, this allowing the water to enter and do the damage.
I believe Brett Schriviner DNF'd the mud the first time, and caused electrical problems, and went on to win the mud SS on the last day. I dont think it was the same SS but can assume that luck was with him the 2nd time round.

I agree with the water bit. There is a safety concern, not all people are typical aussie who can actually swim. Also there is a reliability concerns that may not show for months after. Mechanically I guess most of these cars will be pulled apart afair bit over the next month or so and repaired. But elec wiring is just a big pain in the arse. Also chance of people getting water into there engines is greastly increased. Yes they should be prepared to combat this, but it doesnt take much water to kill some of them in a big way.
As for the rangies being 20yrs old, I wouldnt have thought there would have been much 20yr old rangies stuff left on them (since one of them had a disco chassi- if the rumours are true).
Its abit like the direction of the high powered GQ's, they are getting upgrades to some GU stuff (front axel's).

All passengers OK so I hear. Fire got so hot that there is nothing salvagable, it even melted the springs into coil bind.
Women drivers.... as long as they are ok, all is kewlish..
I hate to tell you but it was actually a male driving the car, Stuart @ ARB.
Sandy and Darren's roll over was caused because the tie rod end snapped and the front wheel came off the car. It was captured on video by Brian Petherbridge and footage of this years OBC will be on Tuesday Night's edition of Sport's Tonight at approx 10pm according to Merrick Beasley who does the videoing of the event.

No word as of yet. Don't know if there is offical protests lodged, who lodged them or how many has been lodged. Final results, if there is protests, may take a while to come out so don't hold your breath waiting for them.

Thanks for that.....I'm aware of one crew that will be protesting as they were given a DNS on a stage that they definitely started and went on to complete in a pretty good time. Will wait for developments.
Cheers

there is a problem with the way the site is linking pics. the only way to do em is the way that i'm doing it to your pics. the pics are uploading properly, just that we can't access them. hopefully it'll be sorted out soon. then all the members one's etc will be back up
also, bout the spaces, just that the first few pics ya put up in this thread had a name like 'Copy of IM000995.JPG ' so they wouldn't work properly, the others that you've since posted without spaces i can link fine
