2wd low gears
I often need low range when in 2wd ( reversing up my steep driveway ect) its a simple mod to allow 2 low, I dont think it's been covered on this forum yet so here goes , the transfer case needs to be out & opened so it's best done while fitting rock crawlers or replacing bearings ect, remove the 2wd / 4wd selector fork and grind or mill the slot towards the fork to a opening of 19.8 mm , then leave the centre locating ball out of the selector locator. thats it , to select gears 1st select 2wd or 4 wd then move stick to neutral and pull across to the hi / low side and select hi or low , always select neutral before moving back over to the 2 wd / 4wd side as well , this system works well but takes a little to get familiar with.

good question , I always did it but the hand book and the sticker on the tunnel warns you not to , Maybe the front pinion & crown need to be under some load to prevent the backlash from knocking ??? You can but then you are turning the front shaft for nothing causing wear on the drivetrain and you can get chatter from turning the diff unloaded. Thats why it says in your handbook and on the gearbox plaque NEVER USE 2 LOW WITHOUT LOCKING HUBS.

is this chatter gonna do much damage? doesn't seem to hurt the girls when they chatter all the time
coupla my mates have been doin it for years without any damage, just wonderin what ppl thought 'bout this....

nah it won't damage anything - it's more the case that it says 4wd on the dash light but you ain't.
Would be great to be able to flick between 4wd and 2wd lo with out getting out tho...

are you sure or have you just shifted into low range when you didn't have your hubs locked. A normal t/case will go in and out of low range whilst the hubs are unlocked
