You get more droop but less travel the other way shock bottoms out more easily.

yea I just packed the top of the shocks with a few urethane bushes to gain a little extra drop , but cutting the tower down would be a better option , do you know how much can be cut off before it starts to bottom out on the shock instead of the bump stop ?? it looks like maybe 40mm to me ?? Do they also fit larger bump stops ?

PM A1 MAV he did this mod to his old coilly

I think he said about a 1" can come off before you need to start playing with the bump stops

Another way to be sure is take front suspension from zook replace without coils. Than you can move suspension easily and see exactly how much you have to play with.

The widetrack bits won't fit the knuckles on a coily are a different size.
it would be easier to convert the widtrack housing to accpt the coily mounts.

From memory i think my new tower that i made up outta some gal heavy wall pipe was bout 60mm high ................the pic here of Lesters Shock tower looks bout well ova 100mm like i said im only goin off memory i flexed mine a number of times to work out how much i could afford to cut out and also how big iwould have to make my bumpstops so that i wouldnt fuk my shocks any way a fe pics of old A1 flexin down on Porters Road / and a pic of Lesters standard height towers ..........................

my new bumpstops were just a peice of 50x50 x3 shs a hole drilled either end and i just unbolted the origianl bump and placed this spacer in then put bump back on and bolted it all up wen the front compressed i had bout 5-10mm of travel levt b4 bottoming the shock out ............worked betta than standard thats for sure

And one of the main reasons i done this mod was because i changed from 2" lift coils to 2 1/2 and also fitted another 15mm spacer to go around the lower part of the shock where the coil perch locates i had already fitted a spacer that came with the ultimate brand lift i origianally purchased and i couldnt afford at the time changin shocks so this mod was easy

I lied just found this pic and you can just see the shock tower lowered height aswell as the larger od size of the tube ( i had been told of a few guys jumpin zooks punchin the shock through the top of the tower the upper plate on these towers is 5mm dont think the new owner will have any dramas

what??? you guys actually lowered your upper shock mounts :?:

If i was going to the hassle of cutting the chassis I would be raising my shock mounts to fit longer shocks :D

But yeah if you are still hamstrung by the original shocks in the front then you can pack the top end down about 30mm on the thread and get about 30mm more droop.

if you put rancho RS5117 or RS9117 on the standard towers you double your suspension travel in the front.

you have to modify the ranchos to have a spring seat on them

Cheers lester

Hey,

My shock towers are lower by a bit more then half the standard size,
I have no problems with botttoming out or anything now.

The reason i came to doing this mod was because i pulled both front shocks through the top of the the towers from haveing no down travel!!!
All it really dose is put it back to the standard position for the strut.

But all is working great and if you have the same setup you should do this mod, its cheap and easy if you know someone who is good at welding.

Extending the shock towers up on a coily is going to bend the chassis as its already a weak point at standard height (or so I have been told) and with the extra leaverage it will bend the chassis in at the top.

Whats this about bending the chassis?I got told when looking into lifts by tough dog that the chassis flexing was the reason that they canned suspension development for the coilly.

Is there any point in a coily suspension setup that isnt a weak point?

myself and xtreem were talking to staff at Big Balls Off Road at the Sydney 4x4 show about mods to my coily suspension and the guy said they dont sell anything for the coily suspension because the chassis have been known to bend around the front shock towers after fitting hi lift heavy duty suspension , I wouldn't expect this to be a problem on small lifts like most of us do (40-50mm), I have never talked to any coily owners that have experienced this problem , but keep it in mind when doing your mods .......................I can see Overkill Engineering selling lots of the coil kits to us coily owners
