Range Rover V8 in a Rocky

Range Rover V8 in a Rocky
Hey guys just wanna ask your opinion.
I have a 3.5 Range Rover EFi V8 lying around.
I'm sure u guys by now know what is the question i intend to bring up.
Yeah i'm contemplating of doing it. But the thing is do u think the idea is plain silly?
1st of all do u think there is enough engine space?
But what i'm really worried is that do u think the torque of the engine will kill the gearbox and the axle instantly?
Considering that a standar 3Y engine would be putting out 85hp as compared to a 3.5 litre V8 would be around 165hp.......
So what say u guys?
Also another thing, i hope Area54 is reading this.
Coz i'm wondering is it possible to use the final drive from a Daihatsu F10 or F20 and fit them on my Rocky F85. Coz i heard they have really good final drive and what is seriously lacking in my rocky is a crawler ratio plus its lethargic anyway.
So if u're reading this, the ring and pinion from the F10 should be a striaght fit on my axle and still able to retain my Locker diff?
Best Regards
Victor

1st of all do u think there is enough engine space? Measure it up....the V6 fits very snugly into mine......consider moving the battery's to the rear or something
But what i'm really worried is that do u think the torque of the engine will kill the gearbox and the axle instantly? YES, but why don't you put a different box and t-case behind it that will handle the torque
Considering that a standar 3Y engine would be putting out 85hp as compared to a 3.5 litre V8 would be around 165hp.......
So what say u guys?
As you live in a country that ISN'T Australia, why not put some Portals underneath....MOGS/VOLVO ??

Holden 308?
Is that the 3.8 litre V6 which is a popular conversion among Hilux and 4 Runners in Oz? Coz i did recall many years ago the Bushdriver 4 Runners were running them when the came to town....
Hey Ferozious,
may i ask what gearbox and trasfer case combination are u using? I believe u're running a V6 right? Very impressive specs especially the ramp pics u have. Lovely.
Well even if the gearbox can take it what i'm worried that seems to be really fragile is the axles and the halfshafts and even probably the locker which is really vicious and laggy at times when locking after 15 years of abuse.
The thing is i'm worried if i do go the V8 route, one thing will lead to another. Unless u're thinking of using the gearbox and trasfer case of the Range Rover which i think will make things more complicated.
Portal axles? Well actually there are a few running around in KL. But the reason is why i wont really bother going that route is coz i use my Rocky almost as a daily car. Plus the axles are freaking expensive.
Anyway i'm using this car to learn how to drive a 4wd which is more important. Plus i've a locker installed anyway. Ppl change axles here is coz they want to have lockers and well..... braggin rights.
Hey talking about final drives again. Anyone here bothered to rectify them or just live with them?

As you stated in your post
, I am running standard Hilux 4Runner gearbox and transfer case, along with the front and rear SPOA diffs. Is that the 3.8 litre V6 which is a popular conversion among Hilux and 4 Runners in Oz
So, I am quite lucky, if I had the funds I would put a Rockhopper in and also Front and Rear Air Lockers...................BUT...........no $$$
Then my final drive would be awesome !!

If you want cheap power i saw an article in a magazine apparently a SR20 turbo fits quite nicely into a feroza..... well not heaps cheap! your looking at about $5k for the conversion (i think)
The one in the magazine had 199kws at the wheels......Can you imagine pulling up at the lights next to some little chump in a gemini with an exhaust and watching the look on his face as you get wheel spin right through to 3rd gear as the lights go green!!

Actually that SR20DET Feroza doesn't run the Feroza gearbox AFAIK and doesn't have a transfer case either. I think it's running a 200SX box and a different rear diff too.
It's owned by some guy with the surname Barlow from memory- plenty of info on it on the internet (eg. Chiptorque's site IIRC)

From my side of things.....it was easy , I just stood back and paid the $$$$$
BUT, from what I've been told, it was a fairly hit/miss affair.
Because I was getting an SAS at the same time, the body was removed completely giving the guys a lot of room to fabricate new mounts...etc.
As for just trying to 'drop' one in......I really can't comment

I measured up the engine bay a while back when engine died and with a body lifta rover v8 and auto box will fit. engine mounts will be the tricky part.a better option for an engine is the 4.4ltr leyland V8 as it is basically the same engine but more powerfull. You will have to run gas or EFI to pass the emision laws.
The only reason i didnt do it my self was wife was prego and i needed a 4x4 with a rear seat. (my roza was on lpg).
Do it it would be an awsome truck even with IFS.

Er pardon me but what's a SAS and a SPOA?
I'm blur....
Care to explain what does the acronym meant?
Hmm V8, V8, V8........ I want a V8.... Then i wont have to bitch about low end torque.
SR20 in a Diahatsu? U really gotta be joking big time hehehe......
What i want in torque at the low end. Not HP high up the revrange. Unless u're the type that wanna here pshhhhhh pshhh.
When it comes to turbocharged performance engines fitted on trucks that i've seen with my own eyes here though i think its silly for off roading. An SR20DET and a VG30DETT in a Nissan Teranno. I've seen an SR20 in a Suzuki Vitara and i've seen Toyota Landcrusiers and Hilux with 1JZ.
SR20 in a Feroza? Must be pretty exciting and down right hilarious to see that drifting sideways hahaha.
Just for your info i've a SR20 halfcut/ clip lying outside my garden hehehe....
And i've a SR20 powered vehicle that's 4wd too. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Incase if u wonder why my nick name has nothing in common with my Rocky.

Well did a SPOA on the Rocky b4 but just felt way too unstable plus the steering side needed to be modded.
So to save the hassle got a Toyota Hilux instead hehehe.....
Running Ultimate Suspension Springs with DeCarbon Shocks
2.8litre diesel with a Garett turbo and a Toyota GT Four chargecooler.
Roll cage, ARB bullbar, PIAA 80 series lamps, Warn XD9000i winch.
LockRite locker rear and LSD front.
I dont have a good pic of it. But u can see it in the background if i can get this pics up.

Argh very tempted to drop in a RR 3.5 V8 since u guys keep instigating me.
Okay now guys now help me out in giving ideas on how to rebuild my V8 lump........
Hmm Port and polished, balanced and blueprinted, overzise pistons(hmm i wonder what pistons are available), cams, valves, increased compression, microtech ltx8.....
argh..............
V8, V8...
Unless someone can make my day by answering my question what is the final drive of a F50 F60. Or someone can help me source a 5.2 or a 4.8 final drive. 3.9 sucks........
Cheers.

Well legislation here is actually quite tight.
But well there is something call "Starbucks Allowance" for the enforcers keke.
Actually i feel there's more leeway when it comes to modification when it comes to oz then here.
But like i said its still in the inital stages and havent decided what to do with my 3.5 V8 on the floor.
Why plonk on a Motec? I think what i want is a Holley on a V8...
I dont think it's a good idea to go EFi for off roading. After wading a river and i need to be towed back to civalization.
But if there's anyone out there who dont want a Motec M800 or just a M400 would be more than sufficient. please kindly donate to me. PM for my address.
Then i'll fit that to my Nissan Pulsar GTi-R. Hehehe
Then come 250kw...... baby.....

True...
sheepish...
Nah MOTEC are really overkill unless i'm going forced induction and direct ignion and wated spark and blah blah...
I guess a Microtec LTX8 would fit in the bill.
Nah it's just that i've always a thing with the sound of carby...
also another thing is that i thought that EFi is abit dangerous for offroading especially once it gets wet, well u're dead..
But then again..... oddly i did ford a flood that's 1metre deep in a stock standard Range Rover and with a foot of water in the cabin.
The car still kept going even though the stupid ecu is located on the floor, under the driver's seat. Oh well.....

If you're keen enough you can get water proof Military spec plugs and you could mount the EFI computer inside a water proof box. Or just put it up high (like above the glovebox).
I suggested Motec because they are easier to program and can also use more types of sensors (ie you don't need to buy a GM temp sensor part number blah blah.. you can use the sensors already on the engine). Or at least that used to be the case a few years back when I worked at an EFI joint.
