I can pick up a 88 highline with 250Kkms, auto for $3000 negotiable,
problems:
1. rego runs out 22 june
2. Rocker cover gasket leaking oil onto manifold a little smokey
(new gasket for rego)
3. needs rear tyres to pass rego
4. speedo not working (don't know if this is cable or electric, help)
5. drivers side electric window switch doesn't work
6. rust in drivers and passengers side window as well as around rear window.
Question:
1. is the rangie worth it considering i have to fix some minor things to pass rego
2. what price am I looking at to fix the speedo and drivers window
3. rust is a concern, but how much of a concern is it really,
is it a common place for the rust and is it easily repairable ( i know how long is a piece of string, just a rough idea)
I think thats it
many thanks
Dixie

if it is the speedo cable...anywhere form $20 - $50 form the parts manual i have here....
if it is the head, then start ringing wreckers to price as they will be all over the place..
Rocker cover gaskets are about $5 -$10 each

Land Rover Discovery - GQ conversion underway
expect to rebuild the auto @ around 280 - 320K that is their average life depending on history.
Expect to pay $1700 - $2700 for the reco - that is the biggest things.
clean the flame traps out and that should help reduce the
oil forced out of the rockers.
Do you have any history on the car ? Any idea of what has been replaced ? normally by this stage the car should have had its injectors cleaned and a new fuel pump (could nearly need another fuel pump depending on what fuel it has been running on and where it was from)

Most items you have mentioned fan be fixed xcheaply within reason.
The ZF auto rebuild cost me $2750 about this time last year. I thopught this was a good price and the chepest quoted. That was a total rebuild with everything replaced with stronger components. Mine did 255,000 befor it died, but hard and flogged by mydelf and the original owner
For that price, the Rangie isn't too bad. Rust is always a worry personally and this would deter me a bit, but a 16 year old Rangie is expected to have a bit of cancer.
The window sounds like the contacts on the switch is clogged up full of crap or the motor has seized. Can be fixed with a drenching of Lanotec. I did this myself and it workeed wonders. If all else fails, a good secondhand motor is not too expensive.
Anyway, good luck with it all.
