ideas for a 4x4 camper

Post by v6runner »

hi all
just wanted some ideas from people who know their 4x4s....
in the future (ie if i can get the money) id like to get a 4x4 to use as a camper, was thinking along the lines of a troopy< not to concerned about camper fitout, just as long as it can fit a mattress for a 6'2 person, some gear n a dog (nah, not the missus, an actual dog)
what is important is that its economical( dont care if its top speed is 90km), easy to maintain n get parts (cheap parts) n very simple design (ie wont break) and it must be cheap to buy (under $10,000, way under if possible). as i said i was thinking of a diesel troopy but for my price range they seem to have very high mileage 350,000+
itll mainly be used for light 4x4 work, like getting to beaches off the beaten track....
im open to any suggestions

I can sleep in the back of my 4runner, and get bout 10l per 100 around town, bit better on the highway cruisin at 95km.. around 8-9.
Get one with a solid front tho, and try and find the factory turbo 2L-TE aswell... the 2L isnt too good on the highways (max speed of 110 on flat, and piss poor economy)

Easily pick one up in good nick for under 10.

Oh yer.. im 6'2 aswell
Cheers,
Dan.

Oops!

I was going to suggest the Grimace Grimace, but I misunderstood the question.

Sorry!

I used to own a 1985 Mid Wheel Base Landcruiser( the ones with a fibreglass removable top). I'm sure you'd pick one of them up for under $10 k, I sold mine for that 3 years ago, it was great one the high way and off road. All I did was remove the back seat, built a false floor( with storage compartments underneath) from the back doors up to the driver and passenger seats, and as high as the rear wheel archs. With the two front seats folded as far foward as possible, I was able to fit a double matress(inflatable one)easily in the back. I got some fly screen and magnetic tape and cut templates to fit over the back windows. It was perfect for camping and with minimal set up, only problem was you had to lift the mattress up to get at things underneath once you had set up for the night. I think I still have some photos somewhere if your interested in going that way.
