I agree with the comment that the HP reverse cut gears do break when abused in reverse. DONOT snatch in reverse. You se afew 80 and 100 series toys that break the front diff but not many.

If you have the cash have a look at these centres:

Biggest advantage with the toy gear set is that that are a true hypoid set up as against the RR centre bevel set up.
And also the pinion head is much larger than the rover providing much better tooth contact.

DiscoDino, i was actually suggesting that you buy standard complete Hilux diff centres in the desired ratio. I do not know if it is the same in Lebanon but in Australia good used Hilux diffs are available for $250 or less.

Bill,

That is what I'll be doing...don't be shocked, but a COMPLETE front 80 3rd in Saudi (where I work) is 54$ USD!!! woohoo!

Nonetheless, from other boards, it seems that precision and superior are the way to go and that is the case. Precision is at 149$ each set, so that is plenty value for money for 4.88s

Thanks to all. GREAT constructive discussion

You don't want an 80 series 3rd, you want a hilux 3rd (toyota minitruck) I think the 80 series 3rd is too big to fit the rover housing. You will probably not break a stock toy R&P - so you may as well wait and see if you do before forking out the extra $$$ for a precision or superior R&P set.

Though you will have fun finding a reverse cut 4.88 for the front.

I used to have an 80series front end with electric difflock in our workshop, It is a reverse hypoid diff the same size as the hilux but with a ratio of 4.1;1 The Toyota Bundera( Sort of a SWB 70series with coil springs front and rear) had a similar reverse hypoid front diff but because it had a 4cyl petrol engine similar to Hilux would probably have 4.88 or 4.625 ring and pinion. Just to clarify, are the hilux (Toyota minitruck) and LC80 Hipinions a fit for the rover housing? I thought it was the LC80 front that needed to be used though I could be very wrong here.

The ones I have seen have used hilux or LC bundera diffs. The bunderas have a high pinion 4.5 (and maybe 4.3) in the front so are a opular source for a high pinion front with a decent ratio

If you are fitting Hilux centres to a series model Landrover which has the steering track rod at the front, you can use any pair of hilux low pinion diffs, but if you are fitting them to a D90 or RangeRover then a high pinion Bundera or 80 series diff would be advantagous to avoid having to put a joggle in the trackrod.

Ah ok, so its more a ratio thing rather than some HP diffs fitting and others not. I'm putting them into a Discovery and changing to 4.1 ratios and so also looking at the LC80 HP front diff center. (Hilux rear with Surf 4.1's in the rear).

Thanks for this Ben and Bill.
