Missmatched ratios

Post by Strange Rover »

What do you guys reckon about running a 7.17:1 ratio in the front and a 7.54:1 ratio in the rear. Will it suck like a 2 dollar whore or it wont matter???

Not for street at all, I got a pos trailer for that.

So any ideas (anyone guess what sort of diffs im talking about and Ruff and BJ keep ypur mouths SHUT)

let me get this right.....................your going to street your trailer?

is it on of those new special ones with a motor a steering???

My guess, if i didnt know what you were doing would be an IFS ferowza front and a rav4 IRS rear.

But i believe that you can only run .1 of a differance, eg 7.1 front and 7.2 rear.

You could run 38's on one end and 42's on the other :D

Can i have a shot.

Starts with "V" ends with "O" sounds like a bisquit.

Portals

If im right Greg knows of at least 4 sets. Cost i am not to sure.

I looked at them ages ago, just would work out too expensive for me at the time.

I dont know about running slightly different ratios if it would matter.

I'm just wondering about rocky terrain like at ormeu were its constant rock and no dirt, would it let the wheels slip.

Close - starts with U and ends with MOG. I found one (well actually two (one front and one rear)) but they are bloody expensive

yeah, same as the volvo portals, i think when i looked at them i was looking any where between $1500 to $3500 a set.

Then i would need to buy another complete diff for spares.

I dont know what the go is with uni-mog spares but the volvo ones had to come down from indonesia or somewhere like that.

Not sure.

You would need to call greg.

I think i was looking at $1500 front $1000 rear but could be totally wrong as the guy with them was very unsure himself what they would be worth as he buys the trucks complete.

It wasn't just the cost of the axle it was all the other shit like:

drive shaft mods ( different unis)
brake drums are 16 inch (means either disc brake conversion or bigger rim dia)
220 mm bolt pattern on the rims
ect ect

The best part though was the selectable locker thats standard.

The ones he had up there were 7.1

The other thing too, is you can convert a rear housing to steering just by bolting on the hubs.

Sam,

I ran a ring & pinion miss-match of 0.01 in my first TJ. 4.10 and 4.11. I never had an issue, probably because this was a relatively insignificant mis-match.

My expectation would be that gear sets should be the same to avoid any torque mis-match on the transfer case which could translate into breakage of the tcase planetaries.

For a definative answer, I would consult either Maurice Thomas ( I will give you his details if you call me ) or Mark or Dinny at Marks Adapters in Melbourne.

volvos

Post by 1MadEngineer »

Tony,
the set i have my hands on are 7:1 for $3800 complete with rims. This isn't bad considering it comes with lockers, he paid $4500 for the truck with no motor so it's not a bad deal. Give me a call if you are interested or i will probably see you on the w'end.

Did you get the Volvos locally or imported. I'm partnering with Cheezy to get some over but I'm having the rims made locally cos they wanted too much for the old ones. $3800 all up is very good if there was no addition shipping costs. The costs of the axles themselves are around $2400.

NAM,
got them here so no delivery charges, and he has a heap of spares even the parts to build a 6x6.If you need any info i am going to see him in a month.. can measure what ever you want. Everyone complains about the strength but they come from a truck rated between 3 and 5 ton payload not 1.5ton like a cruiser/nissan.

Cool! I have all the measurements I need to be convinced to get a set for myself. Tell me about the kingpin issues and your build up plans on tranhtn @ yahoo.com.au. It's good to know that there are spares in Oz.

Ratios

Post by Dozoor »

Strange ,42s and 44s , hypothetical: 3.6-4-7.17 -1mph =824rpm,3.6-4-7.54-1mph=828rpm Maybe even less difference depends on the actull tire diameter - there never exactly as they say.
I ran 3.9 n 3.7s in a zook for a while 1987 with 35s 3.9 in the front . Lack of funds and need of fun, . worked well on steps for some reason. didn't do a lot of solid rock work though probly would of broke fiarly easy on rocks.

Yea, I probably will sell it if I get these mog axles. For how much I really dont know. Ive got a few mates of mine who want it also.

The axle is a Chevy king pin D60 front. Its standard rotation (low pinion)got 4.56 gears and disk brakes and 8 stud hubs. You need 16.5in wheels to clear the brakes (with 15s you got to modify the brakes to get them to fit). Its 69in from wheel mont surface to wheel mount surface (which is bloody wide. Antunac d60 would be 4in narrower but he runs his wheels with big offset to get him the width he needs (which IMO is why he broke the steering arm a TT)). Its got stock axles in it which is 1.5in 35 spline inners and 1.31 30 spline outers. What everyone does is convert the outers to 1.5in 35spline which costs about $360US last time I checked for the kit (+ freight etc back to OZ). Its got the diff on the RHS

Its a bloody big axle in everyway.

I see if I get these mog axles and then Ill do something then.
