depends....
the torquflite 727 3 speed came standard in the early 80's and the ZF 4 speed was introduced in '86

both are pretty good boxes with the TF 727 being the stronger of the 2....BUT they do suck quite a bit of power from the small 3.5l

most people choose the ZF as they are a little more refined and don't draw as much power as the 727...but are very $$$ to rebuild

Also depends on what year rangie you have, if its a 4spd manual then you will have to replace transfer case as well to be able to fit an auto, if its a 5spd then a zf or t/f will bolt up.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

ZF auto, end of story

Rebuilt costs are around the $3K mark, and lasts about 250 to 300K pending on it's sevice life of course. Mine did 255K before it dropped it's bundle, but it had a hard life by me and it's previous owbner who owned it from new.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
