spools and backlash
spools and backlash
Hi everyone, i've just become the proud owner of my first suzi, an '82 sierra 1L hardtop. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to make a mini spool? Are there any cheap commercially available ones for this model? I am on a tight bdget and would prefer not to weld the rear diff so i can return it to standard if i hate it. Also, is it hard to adjust the diffs backlash?

It's probably as cheap to pick up a welded spare diff centre... have a look in for sale someone is always selling a heap of old suzi stuff cheap... you'll probably pick up a 1 litre centre for a bout $100
u should be able to get narrow track stuff cheaper then that

more to it than just backlash, you need to get pinion preload correct than backlash than ring gear preload than tooth contact pattern , which to get the latter you will more than likely need to keep adjusting the former adjustments till it all comes to gether ,
or you can do a dodgy and just mark your ring gear bearing preload caps and count how many times you wind each side out , and get it back excactly the same , but thats ONLY if you are not changing the bearings and if the centre was set up properly in the first place !
hey its a zook a 1ltr one at that what harm could you do , buy yourself a dial indicator a torque wrench and a dial torque-o-meter and some bearing blue and you'll be laughing (or crying if you break down in the middle of no where ) oh and a manuel for the correct specs
cheers and Good luck
