I think I will be trading our NK (getting too many k;s on it).
I took an NL 3.5l auto for a drive.
I was surprised how well these things go considering that they have in theory 10% less power than my 3.5l DOHC. Same torque apparantly.
ANy others with same vehicle?????
ps keeping locker (so dont ask) it should be a bolt in job (again)

I have an NL 3.5L auto.... Crap load of power. Mine is so quiet and very economical. You gonna go all out and get the leather trim? Is the best thing offroad... Get it all dirty and wipe in clean with an enyo glove!

The NL 3.5L is a torquey motor. Comparing maximum figures between the two engines is a pointless exercise. This is typical manufacturer rubbish they use to sell a car. It matters not what the maximum power and torque values are (as long as they are reasonable). What matters more is the SPREAD of the torque, not the peak value.
The NL 3.5L is great because it has a fat, wide ranging torque that give you a push throughout the revs, not a peaky section such as in the DOHC version.
Case and point. My race car and a friends are identical in nearly every way, same engine types just different turbo choices. The max power outputs are the same, yet my dyno graph is much fatter - more power/torque in more places (more area under the curve to be exact). This translates to me making more power everywhere else in the power band. This then translates to me leaving him behind, even though our peak powers are the same.... unless you spend all day on peak power, it's of no use to you.....

Hey, as the saying goes, "Power sells cars, torque wins races".
So yeah, gotta agree, the wider the torque band is throughiut the rev range, the more go you'll have.

Well before my car made a fatal retirement a few months ago, I WAS driving a Nissan 180SX which has the SR20DET engine, 4 cyl, 2.0L turbo. Mazda RX-7 turbo attached. The turbo however has since had a garrett to4b 3.0" inlet compressor and latest spec wheel fitted, as well as the exhuaust housing has been machined to remove the internal wastegate and had a 45mm external gate fitted to the custom manifold.
The usual other things, Autronic Engine Management with traction control, Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI), big intercooler etc.
Engine internals consist of Eagle H beam rods, Arias forged pistons, Nismo big end bearings, Tomei 260 *12mm cams. These are solid variety as I put the solid conversion kit through the head to get rid of the hydraulic lash adjusters. Lots of head work etc.
Previous to it meeting its untimely death it put down 345hp @ wheels. This was done on 1.4bar of boost or 20psi. The turbo runs out of puff above this. I could put a bigger turbo on but I am not happy to lose that low down grunt I like.
the car met its doom after doing a clutch jobbie on it. Somehow the impossible happened and the timing chain jumped a tooth. Pistons interfered with the valves ..... not much more to say other than 15 out of 16 bent valves, rockers arms smashed...... very expensive mistake....
I mainly do club level races and races like Classic Rally in WA (not classic, but lots of fast stuff)....

Sounds really good mate, im a big fan of the 180's, and pretty much all jap turbos. Shame about the timing chain tho, such a silly thing to go wrong hey

If there is one thing about my race car that I have learnt, it's not to stuff with my or my wifes daily driver. There is nothing more annoying than having to fix things on the daily driver, or having problems with it when you really don't want to be working on it.
Some days I get tempted to turbo the paj, then I remember it's the wifes weekly toy ...... not worth the problems!

If some easy money (lotto ) came to me, i'd seriously consider going turbo on my paj, butt like u said, it invites way to many problems, and i'd probably just end up forgetting the whole idea. It's still fun to dream tho, right .

bugger that! Just did a turbo engine conversion in the mrs 9 month old car... Off the road for a week, and going hell better than ever...(I love chicks who put the hoof down)

Yeah, and then the manifolds crack, fall apart, the hoses rub on something and get holes in them. The wastegate line falls off and the first you know about it is when the wife tells you "Hon, I dragged off a Ferrari today, you'd be proud of me, however, I'm not sure if this is a problem, but there seems to be a lot of smoke coming from the rear of the car when I'm driving along ...."

I've had 2 Pajeros autos now, a 3.5dohc NK & now a 3.5l sohc NL.
Both are beautiful vehicles to drive, autos are great & I put nearly 300k on the NK with no problems at all. Changed fluid every 50k.
The NL well , let me say that it is a SUPERB vehicle (heaps better than the NK) & with more useable power.
I couldnt be happier.
BTW the front locker doesnt fit the 3.ol auto, but fits all the 3.5l autos, ie NJ,NK,NL & even NM & NP I believe.

If the auto had automatic 4wd selection then having a front locker may not be recommended.
