Wheel Bearings

Just a quick question.....mine have to be replaced (front). HOw long can you go before you have to get them done? $$$$ is very short right now, the mechanic suggested I get them done 5000km after my last service which is now

Also can we have a sticky that is just full of silly little questions like this? :D

Is there an adjustment for the front wheel bearings? I've got abit of movement, and dunno whether to replace them or whether they can just be adjusted...


Is it an easy DIY job??

Icebreaker, you sure that they havent just come loose? You can tighten them a little but DO NOT overtighten them otherwise they will wear out twice as quick!
Kell, are u talking about getting ur wheel bearings replaced every 5000km after every service? :o My mates roza has about 25-30k on them and havent looked like coming loose

I have done mine a few times, usually after mud runs.

Take em out and wash them well in petrol and blow dry with compressed air. Then check them for tightness and heat scoring and other wear marks, then if they are good repack them well with HTB grease and fit them up again.

I didnt have a tool for the nuts but i used a centre punch and a hammer to tighten them up. Last time was about 10,000klms ago and still running well.

Ah... so they are adjustable... cool, cause there is a couple mm movement in both, and when going down the road at 60+ it can be a real pain to keep the car running in a straight line...

So I might try to tighten them on the weekend, then if i can afford it, put it in for a front end alignment... to "my" eyes they seem to be towing out quite abit... and the RHS front is wearing on the outside heavily... Hopefully it's just the bearings and an alignment... *crosses fingers*

They are adjustable- I looked in the manual and decided too hard for me....

You need to torque them up after diassembling the hub and then back them off 1/6 turn (or something like that). So unless you've got a big mother torque wrench, pay someone to do it!

Mine cost $66 to have both sides re greased and refitted (that was two weeks ago). It wasn't worth the trouble for that price. :D

Kell, does that include the wheel bearing too? Mine were both re used, one wheel was loose which was why I had it done.

Now I need a wheel alignment as it pull to one side since I had it fixed. :cry:

It included the bearings if need be....I have a squeaky front wheel so they are going to take them out check them and if they are ok they will reuse them other wise replace them.

I never replaced wheel bearings. 150,000 k's never replaced em. The front hibs got replaced and then repacked once, but that was it.
