12HT - Where the hell did all these things go :P
Hi, posted in the WTB forum but havent had much luck, figured some of the toyota guru's might have a better idea so here goes
im looking for a 12HT, prefer one thats either low k's (out of an import coaster or something with up to 50thou), or one thats ready for a rebuild. Will consider anything though as these things are damn hard to find.
the 2H in my 60 is getting tired and id rather drop a 12HT in than overhaul the 2H.
thanks for your help.

where are those prices from NICK, i have been quoted anywhere from $6.5k to $8.5k for import motors with low k's but 24v ancillaries (alt starter etc)
does it come with turbo manifolds and turbo? is it 24v or 12v.
humphey wrote:shadow let me know how u go ,and price thanks .
So far 6.5k is about as low as anyone will go, i have had a quote for a local 12HT that needs a rebuild for $5k... rebuilt that would be at least 7k, more than likely closer to 8k with turbo etc.
i guess its understandable really, they are i guess exactly what everyone in my poisition looks for :S
something that perplexes me is that you can buy a complete VX HJ60 for 5-10k AUD in japan. (before import taxes etc etc).
Surely they arent paying half that for the 12HT on its own, and sureley the stamp duty on importing an engine alone would be next to nothing compared to an entire car?
these guys are either making huge profits on the import 12HT or im missing something lol
its getting to a point where importing a wreck and pulling the motor and interior out is the best option!

your missing something, all will sell it with a warranty, most are 6 months and parts and labour. You stated yourself that it is going to cost about 2 to rebuild, i assure you this is well under the figure. To "cover" a warranty claim the seller needs to sell it for alittle more than the claim is going to cost them.
Also take into account from auction, or the internet there is no way to test the engine, i have seen wrecking yards pay around 15,000 for a completely fucked vechicle just for the engine, which turns out to be fucked aswell. so they need to cover themselves this way also.
i think you need to buy a motor starter and alternator and a complete interior would be useless unless you plan to change to 24v as the combo, cluster, switches, master control and the seats are different.

ok you make a good point and i figured there would be things i hadnt considered.
you sound like you know a fair bit so if its alright id like to ask some questions that may seem dumb
do the 12HT and 2H share the same block?
if so could one bolt a 12HT head onto a 2H, rebuild the bottom end for lower compresion, and then try to get the manifolds etc?
the injector pump would be different aswell i believe, 12HT had return fuel line and used fuel as a coolant aswell, would the 2H injector pump still be capable?
Gday
The 12ht and 2h r thesame block. Everything in them is different. the piston has the combustion chamber on the 12ht where the 2h has it in the head. Pumps are different advances aswell, but are not the ones you refer to that use fuel as lube....still thesa,e inline jobbies.
There was one guy on here with a 1hdt in his 60....now that is a good combo....use a hzj75 series bell and put either the 1hz or the hdt or hdft in.

gotta be post 10/84 but.

wow, this is interesting. If i can build a direct injected engine outa my 2H id be happy. Ive read places that the 12HT has piston skirt cooling whislt the 2H did not, is this the difference between the post and pre 84 blocks you mentioned NICK ?
essentially i should be able to get an aftermarket 12HT head, rebuild the bottom end with the correct pistons (crank the same?) and have a good basis for a direct injected engine?
Will the valves etc be different ina 12HT ?
obviously the fuel system, preheating system, inlet/exhaust manifolds will need to be sourced or customised aswell.
will attempt to answer these questions for myself ofcourse.
NICK wrote:why dont you rebuild and utrbo the 2H?
NICK
well i have been told that direct injection is much more suited to turbo charging as the prechambers in the indirect injection will limit the effect the turbo can have.
On the safari site for instance they claim that the 2h Turbo can outperform a stock 12HT (apparently), which seems reasonable to me.
I just dont want to spend the money of rebuilding a motor and then have regrets, a 12HT swap would be the best option, however if i can rebuild the 2H into a direct injected engine (basically a 12HT?) it will be the next best thing i suppose.
