Chassis galvanizing
Has anyone had their chassis galvanised? What should I expect to pay for this for a RR chassis. I have been told $200 but that seems a bit too cheap to me.
If anyone could recommend someone in Brisbane/Sunshine coast that would be good.
Cheers

Galvanising costs anythingfrom $350-450 per tonne.
35-45 cents per KG.
This is worked out on the final weight after Galvanising.
aprox the weight of the item pluss 7.5%.
other costs depend on the size of the bath EI: if they have to double dip ect.
RR chassy should fit in most baths.

you might want to check with qld transport if you want to road register this, i know for instance that they defected a car with a chromed diff housing, said it was weaker due to the chromeing???
Galvanizing is a well accepted anti corrosion method used on all sorts of structural steel. The process doesn't effect the structural properties of the parent steel.
To quote the Galvanizers Association of NSW handbook " the galvanizing process has no effect on the tensile, bend or impact properties of any of the structural steels investigated... changes in mechanical properties attributable to the galvanizing process were detected only when the steel had been cold worked prior to galvanizing, but then only certain properties were affected..."
I have lost of litereature on the subject if anyone needs more details.

Had a FJ40 chassis blasted, acid dipped & galvanized bout 5-6 years ago in Townsville. From memory (which is rusty as hell) it cost bout $400-500.
made the mistake of not filling the threaded holes with grease so I had to re-tap all the holes

How would filling the holes with grease help ??I would have thought the heat just melt the grease and you would still need to tap the holes.
OH .. I know sweet FA about Hot dip galvinising other than you coat one metal with another.

thats what i was thinking aswell

I would be looking at doing it in the next 4 to 6 weeks. The vehicle comes off the road on Friday so it just depends how long it takes to strip it and get the sandblasting done first. I could wait a bit longer though if needed because other things need to be done to the vehicle also.
The place I rang was Sunstate Coatings at Narangbah. That was the closest one I could see to me and I could drop it off on a trip to Brisbane.
