Im thinking that its time to start saving and think about updating to a more comfy rig. I was thinking of the series 1 GU patrol, about late 97 or early 98 in probably the 2.8 turbo D. Does anyone have experience with these vehicles? Im thinking I'll try and buy one from auction, the money ill save im hoping to put into the mods?
Reliability? Are they easy to work on with reasonable mech knowledge? Capability? What are the best mods? Is it worth paying the extra for the ST as opposed to the DX?

I agree with you mate.
Nothing wrong with them. Just they are not built to handle towing heavy loads. And they'are an awesome 4x4 when mated with crawler gearing

Bit expensive when you get a burnt clutch/ cooked head, so on.

I've never come across anyone super happy with the 2.8. If you plan on keeping the truck in the long run (as you sound) spend the extra as the problems associated with the 4.2 are much easier to repair and more info is out there on them.
But if all this makes no sence just remember Nissan "improved" the 2.8 6cyl by replacing it with a 3L 4cyl! Now if that's not a sign I don't know what is

Steer clear and go 4.2!
