hilux cv joints
i don't make a habit of braking them but now i've done it, question is, are hilux, 84 model, cv's interchangable with 60 or 80 series ones?

Thanks for the advertisement
That step was MAD
It appears the CVs are the same, so its yours
So its true then,
60s C.Vs are exactly the same units as the C.V's in hiluxs?
Does this mean that hilux axles are similar in strength to a 60S
and therefore stronger than 40S C.Vs??
IF so, why does everyone say that hilux axles are so weak?
IS the hilux front diff much weaker than the 60S?
Cause I see Dan abuse his 60S axles everytime we go out and they
are fuggin strong hey. Handles the 38"s (NOT 37"s) no wuckkers.
Cheers,
Bart

Hey !! I resemble that remark
From what I have gathered, 40s, 60s and lux CVs are all the same
Axle lengths and spline counts differ over the models and years but CVs are identical.
So now you have no excuse for not keeping up with the 40
Shorty40 wrote:Well that theory just went out the window
Just measured a 40S CV up against a lux CV and there is about 20mm difference in length from the bell to the outer axle end (40S was longer)
Thats a drum brake 40 CV you just measured it up against. Or it has had disks fitted and still has the old style Warn or Selectric Freewheeling Hubs.
All Factory Disc brake cruiser CVs up till but not including the 80series or the ZJ75 cruiser are the same as hilux CVs.
Splines and inner axles are the same, just the lenght of the inner axles changes on only the long side, the short is the same for hilux, 40s and I think 60s but I`m not 100% on that, can somebody conferm or correct me please.

Sounds like this is the case. I had them in a pile of spares from when I bought the rig.
It had disk brakes and 40S axles when I bought it. But in the pile of spares there was the CVs and also a set of old style Warn hubs.
Oh well, you learn something new every day

the outer spline is 10mm longer and the flat sections are wider than the lux ones. after machining of the 10mm and and re machining the groove for the C clip they fit alright.
must be an imprefection in the manufacturing.

Recalling years ago putting 60 axles under my V8 Hilux in the front all disc brake 40's, 60's, 75's >1989 and all solid axle Hilux's had the same CV's.
The LH inner axle on a 60 is the same as LH Hilux, 40's and 75's LH & RH inner's are the same, 60 RH inner is the same as 40 & 75 RH inners and Hilux RH inners only fit Hilux's. I think this is correct as it was 15 years ago i played with this. Then i fitted Dana stuff to the front then went on to playing with 80 series stuff about 10 years ago and not much has changed since then.
Wally.
OK then,
me and my mates want to start looking around for some replacements/trail spares.
With what you are saying we can buy 40S, 60S or Hilux CV's and they swap right in.
That'll make things cheaper!
So why is the pumpkin on a 60S so much bigger than the hilux? Are the centres heaps stronger?
If they use the same CVs, how come 60S axles are so much wider than hilux ones?
I woulda thought the axles would have to be longer to fit in the housing?

you can use DISK BRAKE 40, all 60 and all hilux CV's. the drumb brake 40 CV's are weaker and longer, they won't fit.
the 4x,6x,early 7x use a 9.5" ring gear differential in the front, same as their rear, it is big and chunky and bulletproof but robs you of front axle clearance. the hilux uses an 8" ring gear differential front and rear - not as strong, but more clearance and strong enough for a lightweight like the lux. the axles are all the sime spline count/diameter but there are a number of different length inner axles to compensate for the different axle and differential carrier widths. there is some interchangability between inner axles between cruisers and luxes but it gets complicated and tyhe best way to see if they are right or not is to eyeball it. usually when you bust a CV it's the outer shell that blows up so you can recycle the inner axle onto your trail spare CV (saves you carrying a whole half axle) but sometimes you get unlucky and blow the star which usually takes out the spline on the outer end of the inner axle with it. sometimes you just have to accept that there's things you can't fix on the trail, or that you're going to have to come back with parts - if you're going hard, make sure you go with other people and have the backup of some winches and good recovery gear so that even if you snap 2 cv's you can still limp home.

I had a pair that were identical that I pulled out of the cruiser but it was a MWB FRP roof not a SWB
working dogwatch is not good for the head
I used one in my hilux on the drivers side
the inner axle was about 30 to 40mm longer
so I only used the outer, and got this beefed up.
