1UZ-FE into 94 4Runner
Hey guys,
I've been trying to source some info on this conversion of late. It doesn't look too bad cost wise.
I have never done anything like this before. I have found i can source the motor in a half cut for around the $2k mark. Then Dellow sell a "Conversion kit" for about $1300.
Does anyone have any idea of what else will probably be needed to take into account? I see the conversion kit seems to be all gearbox related stuff, and didn't mention things like engine mounts etc.
Is it true you should always allow double what you initially thought in these projects? I have someone who can do the swap so that parts taken care of.
Any thoughts?
ps. I know it has IFS but i don't care for now.

Who is ORI?
I know that any conversion would be costly. But that's why i like the idea of the Lexus, as the halfcut comes with everything from the ECU right through to the original headers. Plus you can always start them before buying to go over it.
I also figured because of the quad cams "gentle" torque curve it'll be relatively drivetrain friendly. As apposed to some less sophisticated train twisting torquey chevy or windsor donks.....

Guts is doing this. Look at is thread in the members section. I never heard good things about the dellow components but it was a couple years ago now that I really looked into them. Guts has gone with the Castlemaine Rod Shop kit. If prices are similar (I think off memory CRS are a little cheaper) I'd be going with the Rod Shop too.

I have gone with the CRS adaptor. It was $1400 and included new ring gear, COMPLETE clutch setup and the adaptor. Yes dellow`s is $1300 but it doesn`t include a new ring gear as you send them the one the motor an auto comes with and they put that on their fly wheel which would cost you in freight. Plus the rod shops adaptor can easily be modified costing $250 for bolting up a stronger gear box later on if you want, where as with the dellow one you have to buy a new adaptor costing $500ish. So in the long term the rod shop one is heaps cheaper.
I also found that rod returned emails alot faster then dellow and from when I ordered the adaptor COD to when it turned up at the post office was only 3 working days.
I allready have the adaptor on the gearbox and the clutch and gearbox mounted to the motor, it was a very simpal assembly and everything was there that we needed.
Nobody makes engine mounts to suit the 1UZ into a hilux and you have to make your own, which I am going to use the standard mounts on the motor and just make up new frame mount which they bolt to.
Since I don`t have the cab on my lux yet (but hope to trial fit it this weekend) I can`t say 100% if the transfer case needs to go forward or not but have been told it needs to move forward about 50mm for fire wall clearance. This I will look at when the time comes but ATM I am thinking about cutting the hump that is in the fire wall for the AC evaporater and either not worring about running AC or moving the evap back a bit to make room for the cutting. But like I said this I will look at when the time comes.
Another thing is that the oil filter needs to be moved as it hits the frame. Again can`t say 100% but have been told that the oil filter housing unbolts from the block and its just a matter of making up some oil lines to suit to make the oil filter remote fitted.
If you are wanting to stick with a man and not go auto then a crown 1UZ is the best as the ECT and ECU are seperate to one another and the ECT will run without the ECU hooked up. BJ might be able to shed a bit more light on this bit as he has wired his up and had it running for some time now and I haven`t yet touched the electrics.
Sumps, I have a mid mount sump on my 1UZ and at a quick look I think I can make it work but since you have IFS and not solid front like me then I think you`d need a front mount sump, this is something at you would have to checkup on as I can`t answer it 100%
As for cost, my half cut cost me $1900 at my door including frieght, the adaptor cost me $1449 at my door including frieght, then I`ll use what $5 or $10 in steel for the mounts, electrical will cost me nothing as one of my best mates is an auto elec and I am a sparky so between use I`m cetain we can work it all out. Basicly I thin kthe only things I`ll have to pay for now are the new exhaust and the new engineers report oh and some sort of fan.
Hope this all helps.

Hi Guys,
Just found your site tonight.
Yesterday my 1kzte in a hilux surf cracked a head(I think). Getting it looked at now. The options as I see them are as follows, fix and keep the deisel turbo and clutch(also close to gone) at least $3500-$5500 Aus to replace including water pump etc.
Or shall I go 1UZFE? Been hard to rapidly read up on this as it needs to be finished 6 weeks from now. Can cope without it in the meantime. Please give me your thoughts. What sort of price and timeframe for the conversion? What sort of fuel consumption? Do they need PULP or will ULP do? How long expected to last? What are the common problems etc?
Thank you very much for your help

Thanks heaps for the time to write that Guts. That info will come in very handy.
Personally i have no idea about this sort of thing so i'm going to pay a "mate's best mate" to do it. Anyways this guy is highly sort after aparrently by conversion mobs and is opening his own performance shop next month. He does everything from the electrical to fabricating the exhaust etc. None the less i'm sure all this info will aid him when the time comes.
Can i ask, where did you end up getting the motor from for that price? Also, is a 1UZ-FE a 1UZ-FE? If you get what i mean, or are there varying types?
Cheers

No a 1UZFE is not a 1UZFE. Have a search of the forums or information at www.toymods.org.au, or www.lextreme.com and you will find the different types listed there.
Expect the conversion to cost $10000 plus if someone is going to do all the work for you. My 1JZGTE conversion cost this much and I did all the work myself, although I did spend $2300 on aftermarket engine management.

Yeah i've been thinking about that today, even though it'll be mates rates. Mainly because i'm going to need a gearbox reco as well.
Speaking of reco, has anyone tried the "Heavy duty" box from Marks adapters? Is $2650 a good price?

Maybe i should look into forced induction? I think that's his specialty... Mainly high performance cars, but a low boost supercharger or small turbo could be fun.

You may want to consider a 1JZGTE, they have a fatter torque curve than a 1UZ standard, but remember this is at full throttle. The bonus is a factory turbo engine is alot eaier to pull more power out of. My 1JZ is making about 300kW, mods being interccoler, dump pipes, aftermarket management and more boost. Makes 200kW at 4000 rpm which is nearly 480 Nm! You can achieve a little less than this with the standard computer.
As for the Marks Box i dont know. Im running an R151f which is plenty strong enough, but you will have issues with chain/gear driven transfer crossover, but if you search this has been covered before.

Yeah, i want an easy torque curve. That's the main problem, the lack of gusto in the original engine. It's fine around town but travelling etc it just dies on the hills. I'm after a good drivers vehicle, i don't really want a high boost monster.
The reason i thought of conversion is the cost of a new motor when this one finally goes (although it's 100% strong now) plus trying to power it up, versus dropping in something new.

I'm in the middle of doing the lexus V8 conversion into a 93 surf. I've Have the motor sitting in the car as we speak and am going to attempt the wiring on the weekend. The surf originaly has the A343F Auto and suprisingly the v8 bolted straight to it. I left the original chassis engine mount posts and made engine mounts that bolt to the chassis post, then to the standard V8 crown mounts. I then needed to modify the sump as the diff was in the way so u just cut and plated the side. I am using a remote oil filter so gain the oil that i lost by decreasing the sump capacity. I have mounted a huge toyota Crown radiator in. I have a 2inch body lift on mine but you may have a bit of trouble with no body lift.
Not a bad effort for a 18 year old i think.
I'm happy to help or send photo's
Wish me luck wiring it.
