Advantage of body lifting?

Post by -Nemesis- »

Just wondering, (searching for body lift here turns up little) what the pro's and cons of a body lift are?
What advantage does a lift offer on a vehicle like my 4Runner which has well above average body clearance anyway? Seeing as the trucks guts stays at the same height anyway...
Also, what else is involved other than putting in the spacers? And what would i be lookng at if i paid a shop to do it, drive away?
Thanks guys....

I can't believe you didnt turn up anything in search for bodylifting. Tyre sizes, spring lifts and body lifts seem to be the most talked about topics in these tech sections.

Advantages
-The main advantage is that you can clear larger tyres without articualtion being limited byt the tyre rubbing on the body.

-Similar to the first it allows more articualtion in the case of suspension mods before scrubbing on the body. I think i read in another thread that your truck is IFS. This will limit the modifications you can do in regards to articulation but you can still run larger tyres.

-You can clear higher shock hoops so you can mount longer shocks

-Technically it could allow you to run a drive train lift but you dont hear of people bothering to do this that often.

Cant really think of any more advantages though im sure there is.

Disadvantages

-A higher centre of gravity but it isnt really that bad.

-The spline on the steering shaft may not be long enough which would need remedying

-The brake lines will be stretched but most fix this by bending the "cooling coils" that are in the copper part of the lines.

-Depending how you're bars are mounted they will need to have their mounts modified.

-Also heard of issues with the radiator supports

-Im not sure your location but i know in most if not all places it has to be engineered

Im not sure how much it would cost to pay a shop to do it. The components you can buy or make yourself quite easily and cheaply. AS for the actual work it is pretty basic. Try doing another search. you should find step-by-steps on how to do it.

if you have to pay to do a body lift, you should rethink your involvement in this sport (unless you have a medical reason that prevents you from performing the mod). it's not that hard. there is so much information on the internet about body lifts.

The Surf Site has heaps off info and whats involved in their tech site.

Surf Site:

Tech Site:

Seeing the 4runner and Surf are the same when it comes to body lifts.

Another advantage not mentioned is that a body lift makes fitting barwork to protect the underside of you fourby (ie sliders) much easier.

And the drivetrain lift that hybrid mentioned is a good thing on a hilux.
Combine a drivetrain lift and a custom made crossmember and you can get 3-4 inches more clearance under the transfer case.

Thanks to the legitimate replies.

Who says not having the time or experience to undertake something on your daily driven car that would need engineering invokes the need to rethink my involvement in this sport? Other than you? As such i haven't had any need to do this to my 4WD, and this thread was dedicated as the basis of a discussion on the pro's and cons of the process. Seeing as the sub question about what's involved was.... not the main question.

Anyways, when i said the lack of search results, the pc i was on at the time at work is so slow. And all i got searching for "Body Lifts" were threads named:
Peter's SWB Maverick
stumped's zook (suki)...
Flares Delima
double cardan joint
To Lock or not to lock
etc etc, which without wasting the time to go into don't sound like info related to the topic. Especially seeing as my main question is about the pro's and con's in general. None the less, thanks for the links.

Edit: Turns out removing the s from lifts brings a whole range of thread results

When will we see an end to this dominance of the guards?

Cut cut cut ..

more rubber and less metal = more stable.

Unless you absloutely need it to fit a new driveline, or the tyre's are fouling on somthing that is imoveable .. chop it off, it does not have to look dodgy if done properly.
