Speedy sleave. (axle seal)

Post by Kev80 »

Twice now i have had my front LHS axle seal replaced as it was leaking oil into my hub & resulting in grease flicking out of my free wheeling hub onto my rim.

Last time it was replaced they fitted a Speedy sleave to the shaft as it had worn a groove but this only lasted about 3000km, im told now that the sleave is not a permanent fix as they don't last.

Is this true ?

If so what else can i do or should i replace the axle with a new one ?

Used em before and they are supposedly a "short term" fix on things such as your use. I fitted one to the crank on the 350 and its still going strong with out any dramas so far.

I have seen em last for 60,000k's on the crank so I would assume they would last a similar time on an axle, perhaps fitting wasnt spot on maybe ??

Yeh maybe.

I was told they are made of a soft metal like copper etc & cant handle high temps from prolonged use, i was driving about 1000km per day when it happened again.

Did you use the 'filler' that Loctite or Speedi Sleeve reccomend? If you didnt it means that the seal is running on a thin piece of steel and is unable to dissapate the heat as easily as it can with the 'conductive filler'.

I've used a few over the years on diff pinions, axles and tranny outputs and havent had any trouble as long as I've used the goop.

I recon a crank would run hotter than an axle .....

I still think its probably poor installation.

what you should do is sand the grove out of the axle and before you put a new seal in take the spring of the seal and remove a few coils then join the spring back together and put it in the seal . this tightens its grip around the axle. the springs just twist apart and back together

Speedy sleeves are made out of stainless steel and last a long time if your axle keeps leaking i would suspect a bent housing

i had a speedy sleeve put on the rear output flange of my lux and i put in a new seal and it last bout 2 months and started leaking again.

wen i pulled it apart the sleeve had been pushed into the grove in the flange so it wasnt doing anythin different

If the sxle is that badly worn i would suspect a bent housing also worn CV's can contribute to this fault. It is critical that you use the genuine inner axle seal or the same as the genuine as the sealing section of the seal is formed in a bellow's arrangment to allow for miss alignment of then axle. In early cruiser's they used shims under both king pin bearing retaininers and adjusted ther location to set centre height and preload, in 80's shims are are fitted only under the top bearing retainer and it is for kingpin preload only. The bellow's type seal compensates for the height. In some of the swivel rebuild kit i have come across the inner axle seals with the correct dimensions but not of a bellows constuction.

I had a new speedy sleve put in the rear of my sixty like 2 months ago and is fine no problems just tightened the buggery out of it with the ratchet gun.

i couldnt believe the price of them though like 40 bucks the guy asked me whether i would pay with cash or card i said cash thinking like i have a 20 buck note that would be sweet and had to use my card.

The speedy sleeve you pull out if its flogged shouldnt be played with as i cut my finger badly with it stupid thing and no compensation was payed from team special for this incident

Thinking about it, since i have the part time hub kit instaled & didn't engage 4wd on the trip......why should the front axle seal leak ???

Now im getting worried.

Is there any chance grease could flick out of a part time hub without diff oil in it ?

Are the bolts holding the FWH tight? Did the 4wd joint use a gasket or sealant? Or is the 'o'ring on the FWH dial buggered?

Sorry i don't know what your talking about.

The hub has been done twice now by 2 different shops so im assuming all is tight.

Theres no grease/oil leaking from the felt wiper seal though.

Sorry mate, I meant are the two lots of bolts holding the Free Wheeling Hubs(FWH) tight? Did they use a gasket/sealant between the two mounting faces, or is the grease/oil leaking from around the 'dial' on the FWH?

Yeah, its leaking from around the dial. (bolts/alan key bolts are tight)

If the o-ring you talk about is bung would this allow grease to flick out ?

I thought it would be to thick & only assumed the seal is leaking.

Sounds like the Oring is buggered. Mud/sand get in there and chew it out. Should be an easy fix depending on the cross section of the Oring. (whether its round, square, or some weird shape)

If this is true would the seal still leak if the front axle isn't rotating due to the part time kit installed ?

If you have all the part time kit no because your front drive shaft wont be being driven from the transfer case or from your front wheels due to the free wheeling hubs being in the unlocked postion .But if you have only fitted free wheeling hubs the axles will still be being driven causing the axles to leak due to them spinning out of round due to a bent housing the seal cant compensate for the excentricity of the spinning shaft causing it to fail

I have the whole part time kit so the axle doesn't spin.
