I have 315/75 16" ST's on my 80, on the weekend I put a stick about 3mm diameter through the sidewall right up near the tread. These tyres are near new. the tread is breaking off in chunks especially on the shouders, and they are pretty noisy on the road. Maybe I'm going too hard on them expecting mudder performance off road especially on rocks, but so far I can't say I'm all that impressed. a matchstick size twig through the sidewall of a brand new tyre is just crap :( I've got a sticky plug in it now and hopefully it can be patched, I would hate to have to junk a near new $350 tyre :(

ST's are the not quite hardcore ones that are in between the MT style STT's and the Grimace AT's. I only bought the ST's because there's no 315/75 available in the STT and I didn't want to go to the trouble of haxx0ring my brake calipers to fit 15" wheels.

they are nice onroad except for the noise, very good roadholding, progression and turn in for sucha tall tyre, nice balance too, no vibrations at any speed 0 - 140km/h with 5" lift

I'll go back to Fourbys anyday.

I bought a small set of Cooper ST's (255/70) from Fourbys, did 10,000k then it was time to move up a size - upon trade-in they gave me 1/2 new price on the 4 four road wheels and 2/3 new price on unused spare.
Doesn't sound like much but it was what I was going try and get selling myself - deal done on 4 newies (265/75) plus got a 50% spare for next to nothing. I was pretty impressed.

As for the tyre, IMO the Cooper ST is the best 'all terrain' tyre - can't fault them on or off road - way better than BFG AT allround and Goodyear ATR.

After reading a heap of different threads i'm thinking the coopers have pretty weak walls and might go the BFG instead.

The BFG sidewalls are almost as weak as the coopers. Goodyear MTR's win the radial sidewall strength stakes, they are a pretty good all round tyre.

How would MTRs hold up with everyday driving on mainroads?

I'll be heading up to Cape York and then over to Kakadu and Alice springs at the start of next year and want a tyre that will be good Off road but not wear too quickly.

I was under the impression that the MTR has a soft tred and will not last long on highway or city driving.

the newer BFG's have some little sidewall lugs that provide some protection near the tread but their sidewall is still pretty gay. they use a softer rubber than they used to and the whole package isn't all that impressive.

The MTR's are pretty soft yes. but I'm finding so are the coopers (ST's), with chunks coming off the tread on rocks etc. I have heard good and bad stories about MTR's, some people have had them for 40,000km + without a problem, some people have reported delaminations at highway speeds but this could be due to individual tyre faults and/or wrong pressures.

You're pretty brave tackling cape/kakadu in the wet. if you do it in the dry you only need highway tyres, but the bottom line is off-highway driving wears any tyres quicker than normal, whatever you buy, offroad touring will wear them out.

Won't be getting to the Cape until around april/may

Leaving around Feb and island hoping on the way up.

Will be on Fraser for atleast a month, Moreton Island and Noosa etc.

i have COOPER STT's on my bundy, 33x12

depends what you are doing with them, i am fairly happy with their performance, they are wearing quickly cause i drive them everyday, but thats the price you pay for wearing them all the time.

Personally i think BFG muds are better at flickin the mud out from the lugs but they may depend on how much right foot you give. I had BFG's on my last car. ALOT NOISIER ON ROAD THOUGH!

i'd go the MT/R's as they're pretty much a good allrounder.

what about procomp X terrains??

Have 15K's on Cooper ST-C's over Vic High Country, Stockton, Simpson, Blacktop and a bit of rockhoping. They are doing well. Have not staked one so far but maybe I'm lucky.
