installing arb air compressor to patrol

Post by Duff »

this refures to a GQ patrol

ive got the arb compressor all installed except for the two wires that go to the dash illumination and the ignition. I know the blue/white goes to dash illumination and the red/yellow goes to ignition but i dont know where to connect them to.

i was told the easiest way is to connect it to the cig lighter but dont know which one to connect it to. ive got three wires coming out of the lighter a black, red and a pink/black. I think the black is earth, red is the ignition wire, and the black/pink is the dash illumination.

am i on the money or totally wrong

Spot on

the black is indeed the earth.

the red is fed by the igntion. So if you're not using the ciggie lighter.. then use that. (i used that on my UHF instead of the compressor)

The pink/black would more likely be used for illumination.

You should invest in a circuit tester to determine which is which. Pretty easy to use.

Hook the aligator clips to a earth source such as chassis, door hinges etc..

Then put the tester on one of the wires and turn ignition on and off.. light should come on and off to determine which is a live wire or not.

same goes for turning lights on and off on the pink/black wire to determine if its the correct one for illumination.

Cheers

can i strip the wire and just join the compressor wire to the cig lighter and still use the cig lighter and compressor at the same time or does it have to be one or the other and cant have both?

No problem if the red/yellow ignition wire is switching a relay. If the full current draw of the compressor is supplied by that wire (which I severely doubt) then compressor plus additional load (work light to air up at night?) would be too much for the wiring - or more likely the fuse.

so if i try it and it blows a fuse then will i know that its either the cig lighter or compressor.

Has the ARB kit got a relay in the wiring anywhere?

Do you have to run another wire directly to the battery positive terminal?

It should have a relay somewhere as the average cigarette lighter wiring wouldn't be able to supply enough current. I know my Maxair can draw 25amps!

You shouldn't have any problems then.
