diesel rings
with the rings on my hj45 going, i read an ad in 4x4 somethingorother and it said that most people tear down their japanese diesels cause it appears that the rings have gone, only to find them gunked up,
it went on to prescribe this miracle cure, which they sell.
i know to take this with a grain of salt, but could my rings be gunked, or are they junked

Spit my last breath
i have heard of things like this.
If you change your oil regularly and you do an engine flush every so often, you shouldn't really get a problem.
The miracle cure is prolly kerosene just b4 you dump the oil!

I was once connected closley to a mechanic that was building a mates GQ and said he was helping develop a cure for gunk build up with diesels. It was a product that was flushed thru the motor, samples were taken before during and after. It is still available I just don't know what its called.
Anyway my 80 was bought with a service history, had 125000km on clock and I now change oil every 5000km and he did the job on my car at about 180000km probably as a test for gratus. The results wern't that graet and no improvements were noticed.
Other guys in the club were offered the same treatment one was a GQ 300000plus km and the results were noticed. More gunk was removed and some performance improvements were noticed.
Conclusion is that the stuff works better on hi km motors so it may be worth looking at. It does cost a few 100 though. I also think tyhat the older the motor the more gunk build up there is, so the product obviously works, I prolly didn't have as much gunk to remove??

I've never done it. But I have heard of it used instead of paying $$ for the off the shelf engine flush gear. I guess the kero is a kind of detergent in the oil that thins the oil, thus also removing built up diesel scum etc....
I think people add a bit to the oil just prior to dumping it....i.e. add it and let it idle for a while to let it circulate. Prolly not a good idea to go for a drive as the thinned out oil wouldn't protect the bearings etc very well.
I'll try and get some more information for you and I'll get back to you.

its called Cost Effective Maintenance oil flush i think? its for sale in 4WD monthly for $90 +PH from queensland. Apparently it works really well, and if used frequently gets you far better milage from your diesel. My uncle heard about it, told my aunty who told me... but she couldnt remember any details... im just too lazy to call him and ask
Cheers,
Dan.

$90 each time you do it?
OK, I have been given some advice from a source that i trust.
He says, add a litre of diesel to the oil. Let it idle for 10mins, then drop the oil whilst it is hot.
Let it drain for half an hour, and replace the oil filter.
I stress, i have not done this. Although next oil change i am due for a flush and seeing as though i have plenty of diesel in the fuel tank, i think it is worth a go.
If you are concerned, seek other opinions before doing this.
He reckons it is a good engine flush and will not do any damage.

From the Cost Effective Maintenance website:
Flishing Oil Concentrate:
- Suits Petrol and Diesel Engines
- Frees Sticking Piston Rings
- Cleans Oil Galleries For Full Oil Pressure
- Desludges an Entire Engine
- Can Save an Engine Rebuild
- Reduces Smoke
- Reduces Oil Consumption
- Excellent For Japanese Light Diesels.
Personallly id trust this over kero or deisel in the oil and rings.
Cost is $76 for the oil flushing concentrate, and they have a deal for $90 with 250ml oil flush, and 250ml fuel additive... both are free postage.
There is a list of customers comments on the website aswell, which all seem rather promising.

cant see on the site anywhere how many flushes you get for your $76
if its just one time thats pretty expensive :S diesel sounds alot cheaper
I had the same problem with my HJ62 and overcame it using a good quality oil and then. a fuel additive "diesel power" @ 25ml per 100ltrs every second fill. The engine now runs great and my regular run from Ayers rock to Alice Springs (467km's) was using 85 ltrs one way now takes 55 ltrs one way. Way cheaper the the engine rebuild/replacement I had planned. And the engine has heaps more pick up and torque
Thing thats must work together, usually aren't shipped together
I work with a heavy duty diesel fitter, and when queried whether oil flushes worked he advised me against it, on an old high km eng, like mine, it would lose compression and damage the seals.
Also if too much gunk is freed up and flushed around the lubricating system it can block up small oil galleries i.e. rockerarm feeds etc.
use as last ditch effort only, prior to a rebuild so if it does bugger it, it was getting rebuilt anyway.
sorry to sound so pessimistic but thats what i was told by a bloke thats been in the game for much longer than me.

I have done this several times.
drop oil, fill with diesel, run engine for for a minute, drop the diesel, change filter, fill with oil. Put on to this by several poeple.
