Which motor would you choose if you had a choice?

Post by RobG65 »

Gday Guys,
Im looking at replacing my 3.9 in my 91 RR. I have three options (maybe more ie Chev diesel etc.)
1. 4.9L Stroked Rover with Wolf3D ECU
2. New 5.0L VS holden motor chipped to 185Kw
3. Chev 5.7 TPI done 60,000 Klm in a Half Cut with all the bits and pieces.

I wont need a engineers cert for the Rover and obviously the easiest thing to do. I dont want a 4.6 due to all the issues ive heard about porosity etc.

Im told the chev V8 is a narrower Vee so it should be a better fit than the holden.

My truck is Dual fuel so I know im going to have to deal with a new converter and mixer regardless of which option.

Am I right in saying that what ever motor I put into the truck it needs to be post 1992 for emmision regulations?

Im interested in what others think on choices and any other info that can be provided.

Regards

Stick with the rover motors... they fit!!!

most of the 4.6 problems is due to in correct assembly...

IMHO Rover 4.6 with Holden V6 SuperCharger

I have to agree with Mickrangie here. Stay with the Rover stuff unless you know what you are doing.

Funny, I'm quite happy with my 3.9 It's only had a bit of porting of the heads and it sure did improve Aquarangies performance out of sight. I don't run headers either!!!

But once it goes bang, a 4.6 would be my choice bar none.

Im halfway through swapping my 3.5 in my 86 rangie. I removed the engine with the broken crank today and im fitting another re-built 3.5 to it but after removing this engine today the next time i have to replace it will be with an EFI Holden 5ltr. I have prob removed and re-fitted 100+ motors in my time in workshops but today was the first Range Rover V8 i have ever done. I wont be doing another. Why anyone would design such a large engine bay and fit a small alloy V8 stuffed hard up against the firewall astounds me. This was the hardest engine removal i have ever done.

Holden EFI 5ltrs are one of the most reliable engines ever built. Parts are everywhere and are also very cheap. Cheaper than both Chevs and Rover parts.

I tried to buy a rear main seal today and surprise surprise no one has one. Big end bearings were the same. Unless you can contact a Rover specialist on a Sat or Sun you are out of luck.

I did not fit a new rover.

Reasons:

torque at low revs.

Much better options around.

only advantage the rover motor has is engineeering and if any one figures out its not a 3.5 then you are screwed any way.

And yes it has to be of the same year or later and must meet epa regs of the engine year manufacture.

With the 4.9 Rover unless some one actually lifts the heads and measures bore and stroke, they will never know its been changed.

One of the things that has always come to mind is that this rover motor is really a 1960s design the EFI is a comprimise and it's thirstier than a Holden EFI.

With the 4.9 Rover unless some one actually lifts the heads and measures bore and stroke, they will never know its been changed.

To drop a 4.6 in im going to have to either re chip my ecu, which doesnt thrill me, or use a wolf ECU to fuel this thing correctly.

I want more grunt & more miles to the tank of juice. Surely thats not too much to ask

I dont believe programable ECU's are legal.

Correct!!!!

But who cares?

With the amount of mods most ppls have in there 4x4's prog ECU's are bottom of the list.....
