axle wrap, more or less ?

Post by planb »

What do people think of this design ?

ive seen a similar but simpler design before here in aus.

would this induce more or less axle wrap than hinged shackles ?

I would say less axle wrap as the plane of movement is left to right whilst the spring and axle wrap would tend to go front to back. Only thing is you would want a nice secure central mount for the pivoting cross member.

I can't really see what is happening in that pic. Looks like a panhard type arrangement.

Are there any other pics or a sketch?

Still a little difficult to see exactly what is going on there. Is is a centrally pivoting beam that acts as an articulating shackle mount? I like the idea.

I'd say that it would cause less axle wrap than a drop shackle arrangement but like Grimbo says, you would need to design one hell of a central pivot.

if you have a closer look it is not a central pivot it is 2 beams hinged at one end at the chassis and hinged between the 2 beams.. Pretty silly, every time a wheel drops into a hole the end of the beam on that side would drop and hit whatever the wheel rolled off.

Wouldn't this basically not let the spring work?

I can see what he was thinking about but he run out of crack before he completed it, This sort of setup may be ok for crawling but anything over five kmh would be just a nightmare. With all the arms n crap hes made he may have well just went 1/4 with a a/frame ,would handle about the same but wouldn't have the snag points out the back.
Hay but he digs it thats what matters!

Its just a really really poor attempt at a 3 - 4 link rear ...

Man its so bad..

Apart from the springs really tring to pull themselves apart..it just ain't real professional at all...

if you have a lot of antisquat, it will make it worse, that design, by nthdegree, would be alright on horizontal stuff, but on uphills and stuff, forget it, its similar to those folding shackles

What's so bad about those folding shackles?

I've heard that they will un fold in the rear under acceleration up hill. Is this due to antisquat solely or is it also to do with axle wrap? If wrap has something to do with it, a track bar sould control that. But I suppose once you put a track bar in there, it will induce anti squat when the diff tries to rotate. How much of a problem is it if they unfold? Even on uphill they would only unfold once the suspension was fully extended, right?

Like BJ said, that beam will work the same as a folding shackle, wacky shackle, buggy leaf or revolvers. A typical traction bar (fixed on the diff and connected to the frame with a shackle) may stop you ripping unis out of your tailshaft but wont help the unloading problem with these sort of shackles.

Have never seen any rig with this sort of gear work well in the steep stuff. They open up, the rear axle walks under the rig (giving more rear lift) and the rig falls over backwards.

all good points ezpecially this last one

the problem though is due to the suspension unloading, or "fully extending" multiple times while climbing the one obstacle, and by that i mean, it will unload and load up, like a monkey, on football
