Pedes or Locker?

Trying to decide what would be better (off road) for my SWB Crusier, Centipedes or a rear locker with my current Grimace all terrians (bout 75% tread left). Would appreciate any comments.

First off i voted Pedes.

The reason i say this is because it will be SOA soon and you will need to learn how to drive it again :x I think the longer you are without a locker the better you are at picking the rite line. This is a magor factor in 4wding and will aid you even once you get a locker futher down the track. Ive seen people go out wheeling with lockers and not get as far as unlocked vehicles purely because they didn't have any line picking ability :oops:

The locker will get you futher up the track now but if you hold off, get ya pedes then the locker you will get futher then the next bloke down the line :twisted:


Pedes then locker. . . not the other way around !!!

An interesting q actually, much as I generally hate polls. Adam brings some curious points up. I actually voted locker, because I think it get you further in general terrain. This is based on pretty juvenile knowledge.

I went with a nice set of tyres before I considered lockers partly because they are a lot more visible than lockers. Looks might count to you. There's no doubt that decent rubber makes a big difference but all tyres have their advantages and downfalls. Bigger tyres also give you clearance and reduce the relative size of obstacles of course, so if increased size is part of your tyre choice, then I'd definately give it more weighting.

But lockers are another kettle of fish. The main difference I think of, is the fact that you can pop a wheel in the air and continue drive on that axle - that to me, opens up a whole new bunch of line options and generally gives some freedom to choose some lines that work for the vehicle, rather than worrying about a tyre lifting. Adam brings up a decent point though - its definately worthwhile learning the car before adding something like lockers. As far as offroad ability goes, lockers seem to me to be a different league. Think of the difference you get when you engage "4wd". I remember when I first started 4wd'ing, and trying a line in 2wd compared to 4wd really shocked me. Now think of 4wd as actually being 2 axle drive. Then think of a locker as adding another wheel. Two lockers gives you all four wheels. I now often consider 4wd as being really being just front and rear axle, not 4 wheel drive.

Anyway, recent experience offers an anecdote: I went driving at Sugarloaf with beefie the other day. He has a roughly similar spec MQ to me (expect he has 2" suspension lift as well) but runs 33" AT's. I have 33" MT/R's (which in general, rock). Some of it must go to his driving ability and my very much out of touchness, but beefie was basically in a different league. He had an automatic locker in the rear and I was unlocked, and I think that made more difference that rubber choice.

Well, that's most likely to be all dribble though, since I'm drunk at the keyboard again.

they are both good mods, but I would be leaning towards the pedes. Yep, the locker will get you furthur up the trail, but as mentioned, will not teach you how to pick a line. But, you'd be surprised how far you can go on a set of pedes, low pressures, a good line and some momentum.

If you want to learn the lines then turn the locker off. Pedes are shit on the road and you will have a spit about them 10,000km later.

Go the centipedes, i got some chunky tyres for mine and made a huge difference, and like half the others have said it'll teach you to pick the right line to take. then get a locker :D

I had the same choice while back, opted for the locker and couldn't be happier.... gets me same the places and further then guys running bigger and chunkier tyres then me!!

Definately LOCKER first.
Then you don't need the momentum, which is what breaks things,bounces you off line and helps that tree jump out in front of you.

Well i voted pedes, ive got 2 arb lockers and 36" pedes, and previous car was unlocked with 31" bfg mt's,
but my choice is based on where I drive, mainly mud and greasy stuff, and not a whole lot of rocks, If I drove rocks a lot i'd go the locker.

From reading evryones comments I think your decision comes down to the terrain you do.

Mainly Rock = locker first
Mainly Mud and Slop = pedes first

Depends on the terrain I reckon.
I got a rear locker when I had 31" BFG All Terrains it made bugger all difference in our Victorian mud but a big improvement in the dry stuff.
The Pedes if your driving mud will make the biggest difference lockers if your doing dry stuff.

As frank says. No point having a locker or lockers if you are on AT tyres and its even the slightest bit slippery. Instead of two wheels spinning with open diffs you will just have a cool looking 4 wheel spin happening.

Tyres will provide more grip with or without lockers.

Agree, if you do mud and low traction stuff, then get the pedes. If its all or mostly high traction like rocks go the locker.

I'm entirely with tyres before lockers. Sure, a rear locker will get you further, but are you confident with the vehicle and teh situation you will be in once you get there. I think there is a natural process of knowledge and confidence. Teh car, tyres, suspension, better tyres, lockers, better suspension, the list go on like this.

If its not your first 4wd and you've been doing it for long enough, then there is no question, cause you know the answer.

first thing i got when i got my 4wd was tyres and suspension
played with that for 2 years nearly before i got lockers
then i got bigger tyres and suspension ... u will find if u have a good suspension and tyre package u won't use ur lockers much anyhow ..
i try to stay away from using the lockers till im stuck or want to get some where narly

then again ... i would only buy pedes if ur in the mud ... they're kinda crappy on rocks ..... if ur playin on rocks go a swamper ... or MT/R(cheap and does just as well as a swamper :D )

With pedes it will look way cooler. Doesnt look any cooler with a locker. But will sound cooler with the pssst noise when you turn your locker off. But then again the noise of the pedes, you wont here the psssssssst.

So in summary.
