Need some MQ info
Need some MQ info
Been browsing the forum looking for some info on MQ/MK's as a replacement for the Viagra sometime down the track.
There's lots of bits and pieces but it seems the best type of MQ would be one made form selected bits and pieces. Trying to find out what is found together as a package in what models to determine the best start point, and searching through 20 pages of "MQ questions" threads at 56k is killing me..
Goal is probably twin locked (or LSD's) SWB petrol on 3" suspension lift and 33"s for legality, although won't rule out some 35"s and a little body lift for play. Would also consider SD33T but no other diesel.
The key questions are:
5 speed - I know the turbo diesel is different ratios but are the diesels different to the petrols? Were the diff ratios the same for 5 speed and 4 speed or did they only come out in ratio X?
I believe almost all MK's had 5 speed and it was an option from about 83 onwards.
I know cabstar boxes can be used, and the diesel cabstar seems best box of all for ratios since there's no rockhopper option.
Seems there's many issues in swapping diesel 5 speeds into 4 speed petrolss and all that so a base 5 speed seems near mandatory.
Diffs and LSD's:
What's out there as standard in conjunction with which boxes/engines and how do I tell the difference off a compliance plate or model?
Are the front and rear interchangeable (ie put rear LSD in front) or can you do stuff like you can with the GQ and steal rear LSD's out of Navara's and the like for the front of the MQ/MK?
Is there any models you can't get LSD for (ie H233 can but some other diffed models cant)?
Is the LSD in the MQ as good as the GQ?
Power steering and aircond:
How common? Are they standard in certain configs or after certain age ie: all T/D's had them and an LSD and 4.625 diffs, or all 83 on are PS and all 85 on a/c? P/s is mandatory for big rubber and in QLD Aircond would be very good.
Suspension flex:
How much can I get out of them without major or custom rework? Will a good set of shockies and good aftermarket leaves (plus the mandatory ditched swaybars) enable sufficient flex or does it need custom work or major redesign of the factory setup to go better?
Thanks in advance

The SD33 came out with 4.625's
SD33T 4.3's from memory
and the 2.8's were even higher again.
Don't be sucked in by the price of a cheap MQ, find a 5spd MK and go from there. It will save you heaps of unhappiness down the track
As for flex and suspension, you can't get max out of the front but the rear with a locker sure makes up for that, just get used to plenty of wheels in the air.
When i finally went 35's it did however make the 4spd able to live with

The diff ratios in MQ's were not a variant on what gearbox was in it. The 4 speed box has different ratios to the 5 speed but all 4 speeds and all 5 speeds have the same ratios.
L28 patrols came out with 4.6's and so did the SD33.
The turbo deisel came out with 4.3's, but u can also find some models that have 4.3's or even 4.1's in them.
The very late model MQ utes came out with 4.8's. they are the way to go but are extremely rare.
putting a 5 speed in place of a 4 speed is not that difficult. You either have to shift the moter forward on the engine mounts or u have modify the transfer case mounts. then u will need appropriate driveshafts to suit.
The last tickle is the top gearshift lever will cause a problem but where there is a will there is a way
Later model MK's tended to have the 5 speed.
MQ and GQ diffs are not interchangeable and if u get under the car u will see why u cannot swap an MQ rear into the front. MQ front diff centres are completely different to the rear. Nothing will interchange with the front though u may be able to find an option in the rear but dont really need to as u can get lockers for them and LSD.
LSD comes standard in many MQ rear diffs. Didnt come out in the front. Nissan made them so they will all work similar as to whether a GQ is better, it is much of a muchness. They ARE affective and handy
Aircon was an optional extra in all MQ's. The SWB didnt have it till later, but the LWB came out with it option from factory.
Ive got a spare setup here if interested
Powersteering was far more common in LWB than in SWB. it was an option in longwheel base after 82/83.
Aircon is easy to get a hold of. Power steering is a pain, but are easy enough to find. the problem lies in the fact that u will pay a great deal for the setup.
With regards to the flex, If u are intent on stayin spring under axle, then just a new set of shocks and a new set of leaves, with only 3 leaves in the pack ( buy the fat pack and take em out so u have spares ), and ditch the swaybars and u will get good flex.
U will need lift if u reduce the leave number though as u WILL scrub.
I will be fitting a trackbar to mine as i will get plenty of flex with 2 load leaves and SOA
Hope this helps

I haven't actually checked mine, but according to my FSM they are 4.625s.

damm Screwy.....I feel completely schooled and I didn't even ask any questions.
Topics like this are exactly why I visit this site. You guys are the shiat!
All I have to add is this....but my MQ is from Germany.
Mine is an 83 SWB MQ. It has a C200 in front and in rear. I also have a rear LSD which Bart has informed me is standard in Europe. I also have power steering but no A/C. My diffs are either 4.6's or 4.3's not sure exactly which yet. I have been to S.America and seen lot's of MQ's/Mk's down there. They don't all have disc brakes in the front. Also the MQ/MK ute is fairly common in S.America as I saw 4-5 and I wasn't there long and didn't get around a bunch. I would love a MQ/MK ute someday!
I know it is not very useful info but that is what I have to add.

According to my FSM your Shorty should have 4.111 diffs.

L28 Patrols do come out with 4.625's in the MK's. The last 2 i have collected have had em. Not sure on the earlier MQ's though...
HAVING FRONT DRUM BRAKES!!!!!!!
ARRRGGGG
That is very uncommon. I dont think the ones in AUS ever came out with that........

All 2.8 petrols came out with 4.625:1 ratio's and no MQ's hit aus with drums on the front

They wouldn't move with any taller diffs

that's for sure
Very interesting that the C200 rear frequently has the LSD in it. I'd like to get my hands on the LSD center from one, can anyone confirm that they're 29-spline?
In search of an MQ (offset) H233b rear, housing only preferred, plus a complete GQ or GU front (4.6 ratio ideal) to be shipped to the US. Cheap! Email/PM if you can help.
Thanks guys - it's all really good help. Back to my Datto roots and still got L series engine manuals floating around from the Zed's.
I would have thought that the 5 speed would have same diffs and the overdrive high was mainly for fuel economy so that's great news at both ends of the gearing.
A 2.8 Petrol on 4.6's with a set of 33" tyres and 4 speed is similar 1st low gearing to my Vitara on 31"s. Sure the MQ has a bigger motor, but I definately want the 5 speed
Seen a few good looking mid 80's MK's for $3k or less down in Sydney/Newcastle since it's so much more expensive it seems to buy any 4by in Brissy that might be the go. Saw one advertised recently for about $2000 regoed with A/C, P/S and 5 speed for instance and another in a yard for $3k with same goodies in really good condition. A lot of diesels and even some turbo diesels for that sort of price too.
Since it'll cost me more time than I have and money than it's worth for any of these afetr purchase I think I want one with all 3 and will pay a grand or so more if necessary.
No rush since I need to destroy or sell the Vitara first, and I might wait the month or so before my old man heads back up to Newy so I can get him to check one out for me unless I find a good one in Brissy first.
I'm very used to front wheels being in the air from the Vitara so I know what it'll be like - Great rear travel and a locker or LSD helps. Being able to expect your front diff to survive if you put a locker in that will be good too.
Damn no substitute front LSD like you can pull with the GQ. Might just have to spring for the Airlocker.

There should be a set of numbers on the top of the box,... not on the top cover but on the top edge of the actual cast housing.
They should be on that top edge , at the front , on the passengers side.....
Should be a 5+ didgit number ....... its the "serial number",....
get me that number and Ill check it against my book if its listed.
The book is a bit tattered n worn and quite a few pages are missing unfortunately, so it luck of the draw really.
The book was like it when I got it and I cant get hold of another one..... and b4 you ask yes I have tried and bribed and even offered sex for another one !!

WTF kinda book is it, the NISSAN BIBLE!?
I have gotten every book on Patrols I ever needed on ebay, cheap usually and some are 40 years old or more and mint. Just got a 30 year old mint Patrol owners manual from Oz for $25 usd with shipping included. I have even gotten Nissan Japan to send me micro-fiche at their cost...no cost to me, it was free and sent fromJjapan to my door! All i did was write a letter kissing arse by snail mail and send a few emails.
So I am really curious...WTF kinda book can't be traded for sex, beer or the all mighty dollar??
BTW, you let yourself open for a good flame with the line I quoted, good thing I think flaming is lame.
