WHICH SHOCKS FOR AN 80 SERIES

G'DAY I,VE JUST BOUGHT AN 90 MODEL 80 SERIES

AND I'M GIVING IT A LIFT.. I'M PUTTING 60MM RAISED KINGS SPRINGS

IN . I'VE DECIDED TO PUT EITHER KONIS OR BILSTEIN SHOCKS

IN . WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO AND WHICH WOULD

BETTER TO USE .. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT THANKS..

you have selected shocks from the top shelf either way you go.Most of the bilsteins that you wil find are gas type shocks,the Konis on the other hand will mostly be oil types.You can get Koni gas as well,and you can get Konis in adjustables as well.Koni have just released 2 new model shocks,they are called the Heavy Track & the Heavy Track Raid,more info about them can be found on the Koni web site.I have found the performance of both brands to be exceptional over all conditions and over a long time span.The Bilsteins are usually a firmer ride though.I run Konis in my Rangie and in my previous Rangie and my 60 series Cruiser and have found them to make the vehicle handle more predictably on the road as well being very compliant off road.
As a bit of a by,members of our club travelled across the simpson and into the Kimberly last year,and the only vehicles that never had suspension troubles were fitted with either Bilstein or Koni shocks.

You won't go wrong either way. :)

I had Ranchos for 3 months before I tossed them in favour of something that worked. :shock:

ive heard rancho are now finally suggesting to ppl not to fit to gu gq PATROLS as they arent up to the job

Go the Konis. The Bilsteins are a great shock, but are a monotube design. So if you dent the shock it is junk, whereas the Konis are double walled.

Some of the Konis are adjustable, which will allow for some beneficial tuning and whilst both are excellent, as it says above, the bilstein is monotube and has limitations.
Ranchos are awesome...when used for the right application...and will not work well on larger vehicles.

GO the konis. I have dents in mine from when I bent the panhard rod and trailing arm broke. They still seem to work, they are about 150 00km old. Was thinking of getting them rebuilt soon. Also the ones I have are the adjustable ones, they arnt like Ranchos, toughdogs etc why they can be adjusted on the car. The shock needs to come off to adjust them.

I've been told however that the Konis adjustables are supposedly set for your vehicle capacity and if you change the preload or dampening rates you void the warranty. :twisted:

What ever shock you decide on, get GQ rears and a pin eye converter for the top, and you have an extra long shock for cheapish money. Standard length aftermarket shox are still too short for the 80 aftermarket spring, and having a swivel on the top of them lengtherns their piston bush life aswell.
Mannell motors sell these adapters as would others. You can also put rear 80 shox on the front with thesame adapter if lifting it up 100mm
