tyres for my gu cab chassis

Post by mr Z »

i've got a mate who works at a tyre place he's got 1 month to go before he heads off over seas, so i've decided to buy some bfg mud terrrains before he leaves(if he comes through with a good price?)

so 285/75/16, is actually 33'? and will fit under my gu cab chassis?

i will end up getting a 2 inch lift in a few months, will these tyres still fill the guards nicely or will they look a bit small? (anyone with side on pics, running this setup? (on a gu wagon or ute?)

what is a fair price per tyre?

what sort a lif would i expect from these tyres?

i've got the 4.2td will these tyres change gearing/handleing much?

thanks guys :D

285 75 r 16 is just under a 33

yes they will fit a gu coil cab ute

the gearing wont be too bad as the ute has 4.1 diffs whereas the wagon only has 3.9

i'd get MT/Rs over BFg's nowadays

and yes this is what im putting on mine day 1 :D

yep same size

MT/Rs (goodyear) last longer, HEAPS stronger sidewalls, good for 70,000kms

What so good about BFG MT's? If you say the reputation, that was lost when they changed to the new soft compound.

MTR's anyday over BFG... Also look at Procomp X-Terrains...

sorry to hijack but Roly so this is wat you got outta ya last set thats pretty damn cool i was lookin at gettin some 315/16's for my pos for road dutys but was leaning towards bfg allterrains due to i thought the mtrs would wear quickly ............... and also i didnt see the need having to sets of mtrs (with my 37"s)

But looks as though i may well change that opinion..............leave the larger for the extreme shite n the others for road and occasional offroad wen i cant be fuged chagin tyres

Cheers for the info Dan

I would still go with the AT's... You will still get better wear out of them, I wont get near 70,000 out of my MTR's..

ive done fug all wheelin on my 37's but i have a few mates that run these and other sizes and they work great some say that the mtrs dont like mud as much as BFG's do but than others say that they are fine for rock work the mtrs leave the BFG's for dead hence the reason y BFG prob designed a new tyre the KRAWLER in the states for all the rock work that there comp buggys do to compet back with the mtr

In Mud and snow I think MTR's work better. MUD is a contensious issue as there are things like who went through first and cleared a path IE diff cleared. What is stopping the truck, lack of traction or lack of ground pressure because your on the chassis etc etc.

The main reason I say this is the side lug array. At the right pressures they allow you much more control in mud and help you stay on your chosen line. Most people get stuck because they can't stick to a chosen line in big holes of slop even though they can see a crossable one. There are better MUD tyres but between the two IMHO the MTR is better. Some have said they don't clean well but cleaning is also dependant on HP/Ratios and driver technique you cannot expect a tyre to clean itself stuck in the bog hole because if it is the tyre must be digging a ever bigger hole to start with.

I was out with my old club and my mate was having drama's on a set of BFG's in a red clay hole, I gets in there and popped straight through pretty identicle setups too an tyre age. I put that down too my edges being forced to cut into the exit ruts when I forced the wheel to bite and get me out which was where he was having difficulties.

Anyway mine have 50,000km on them and they are 3mm off the wear bars or around 40% on a GU that weighs around 3ton with all the shyt in/on it.
