Have any of you broken your front diff.?
i've recently got my 80 and was thinking of putting a locker in the front.
Am i more or less likely to break something with a locker fitted? if not should i fit a lokka for $650 or a detroit no spin(has it's own carrier) for $1150???

80 series front diffs

Simple basic logic with the ARB if you loose air for any reason [eg stuff the compressor , burst a air line or burst a diafram in the diff ] you do not have a diff lock
With the original Toyota electic locker if you do ever damage the activator you simply remove 3 bolts and you can lock or unlock it with a screwdriver

So there you go sounds like a fair conclusion to me . are they as strong ? and what are replacement parts priced like and avalibility of them ?
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at
I have only had to replace bearings in my diff after 6 years and about 230,000 km
and that is a hi pinion fitted to the rear of my 4runner and turning 33s
and a Toyota Lexen VR V6 [Commodore ] engine driving through a R151 gearbox fitted with 5.15 Dyna gears ,and dual transfer cases also Detroit

the vacume shifter is worth $330-385 second hand, the solinoids on the inner guard (which always fill with mud) are worth 165ea. other than that you wont really have any problems, Although if high Km'ed and buying complete you may need new axles and drive flanges which are worth about 400 bucks for all of them after market.

This can all be modified. And the stock housing can also be modified to fit the E-locker.
yes they can be modified, if you do not have a locker i would prefer an ARB as there is no modification needed in this department (bar drilling a whole ) they are more simple to install and i think in the long run would work out cheaper.

On a good note, a pair of complete diffs with the lockers, all the wiring and solonoids is only worth 2500 as no one wants them.

I hate to disapoint you but
I fitted the locker myself and used a 4runner rear window switch and control box and GUESS what it stays locked untill I am ready to turn it of
diff centre $750 switch and moduale $80 and my time
What gears are you running in this rear mounted hi pinion locker?
One other thing that hasnt been mentioned yet, is the later 80's with factory lockers had the front housing laminated.
I have ARB's and they leak oil from the solenoid exhaust....(good for European salty roads) but like its been said......parts are readily and fairly cheaply available for broken std diffs with ARB's.
The front short axle shaft of an 80 factory locker is a different length to the std diff also....now i just sold a preloved std length one for $50 to BJ56.

To help you out a bit ,I think the air locker strengthens the centre a bit could be wrong about the 80s
